Historia
Vermeer: Portraits of A Lifetime is a revolutionary reexamination of the mystique and mythology surrounding the 17th Century Dutch Master painter, Johannes Vermeer. For the first time in over 300 years names of people who posed for his paintings are identified. An unknown portrait of Vermeer, painted by his friend, Gerard ter Borch, is exposed. This book is an empathetic retrospective, built on observations that reveal answers to dozens of speculations about his paintings, his wife, his daughters, and contemporaries who were the subjects of his art, and with whom he shared his brief life in Delft.

supposition could misinform
Revisado: 02-07-23
He has spun an interesting tale and it's a pleasant read. He's done some thorough research and some of his conclusions could be true but they could just as well not be. The problem is that since it is such a good read, you could possibly be fooled into remembering 'facts' that are only his suppositions. I'm not a fan of embroidered history.

Historia
To Paradise is a fin de siècle novel of marvelous literary effect, but above all it is a work of emotional genius. The great power of this remarkable novel is driven by Yanagihara’s understanding of the aching desire to protect those we love—partners, lovers, children, friends, family, and even our fellow citizens—and the pain that ensues when we cannot.

An exquisitely written, convoluted book. It will surely enter the canon of American literature.

Historia
Mani Steinn is queer in a society in which the idea of homosexuality is beyond the furthest extreme. His city, Reykjavik in 1918, is homogeneous and isolated and seems entirely defenseless against the Spanish flu, which has already torn through Europe, Asia, and North America and is now lapping up on Iceland's shores. And if the flu doesn't do it, there's always the threat that war will spread all the way north. And yet the outside world has also brought Icelanders cinema!

opening scene distasteful
Revisado: 05-02-21
the opening scene is a rather rough and graphic homo-pediphile encounter which turned me off and I stopped listening. a few weeks later I reluctantly returned and discovered a well crafted and insightful
tale of the 1917 flu as it was handled in a provincial society as well as that groups 2-faced dealing with
gay youth. it's a good book

Historia
Joseph, a literature student at Berkeley, is the son of a Jewish mother and a Muslim father. One day, a mysterious package arrives on his doorstep, pulling him into a mesmerizing adventure to uncover the tangled history that binds the two sides of his family. For generations, the men of the al-Raqb family have served as watchmen of the storied Ibn Ezra Synagogue in Old Cairo, built at the site where the infant Moses was taken from the Nile. Joseph learns of his ancestor Ali, a Muslim orphan who became enchanted by the legendary - perhaps magical - Ezra Scroll.

Surely this will become a classic
Revisado: 08-06-18
Beautifully conceived. Deals with the full ramifications of the AIDS crisis and society in general in a warm and humane fashion. I've never read anything that as fully covers what some of us lived through from the late 70s til the first decades of the 21st century and the affect it has had on so many aspects of our lives. Makkai writes fluidly. .. almost a page-turner..a marvel considering the extraordinary amount of research which has gone into this book.
