Historia
Amid the complexities of modern relationships, loneliness epidemics, and online dating burnout, there's a refreshing alternative: going Solo. "Solos," as coined by behavioral economist Peter McGraw, are people who choose to lead their lives authentically, purposefully, and passionately outside the confines of traditional relationship labels. In a world built for two, Solos break the rules and hold space for every type of individual—single and not.

Ignore Chapter 9, "Relationship Design"
Revisado: 07-22-24
I was enjoying this book until the author spoke about "Relationship Design" - where he actually thinks a woman and a man who want to date talk openly other about their relationship boundaries, expectations, values, etc. Excellent in theory, but this is how I know he is terribly oblivious to his own gender's attitudes. Does he honestly think the vast majority of men are willing to engage in such honest communication from the get go, when they're usually just seeing how long it takes to get laid? Most jump to defensiveness then anger when they detect even a whiff of rejection. The author has never had to date his own kind - of course he thinks discussing relationship logistics from day one with women is a great idea because we generally have the emotional maturity and ability to respect other people's decisions without resorting to potential violence. I'm surprised none of his female friends brought this to his attention... perhaps his writing was done a bit too solo.

Historia
Studies show that nearly 70 percent of divorces are initiated by women—women who are tired, fed up, exhausted, and unhappy. We’ve all seen how the media portrays divorcées: sad, lonely, drowning their sorrows in a bottle of wine. Lyz Lenz is one such woman whose life fell apart after she reached a breaking point in her twelve-year marriage. But she refused to take part in that tired narrative and decided to flip the script on divorce.

Required reading for all cishet women

I’ve never been married and I already know the danger of marrying a man who only sees you as a means to HIS end. Lyz describes her husband’s sense of entitlement to her domestic and emotional labor, as well as lack of basic respect for her feelings, with a healthy amount of anger. Her frustration about his refusal to be an active participant in their marriage accurately depicts the situation I see most of my friends and family in. This is a book about liberation and women choosing their own lives over society’s expectations. We’re done sacrificing ourselves to patriarchy.

Historia
A Single Revolution is one book for single women that won’t approach you like you’re unfinished. It’s for those who are exhausted, frustrated, confused, or angry - who want relationships but don’t deserve to be miserable in the meantime. You can be happily single and still meet someone. It’s possible to value your single time so much that you refuse to give it up for anything less than the amazing relationships you deserve. It’s also possible to stop searching for them so relentlessly that you ignore every other aspect of your life.

An ode to self-worth

I've enjoyed Shani's podcast and her Medium essays, so was eager to read her first book. I must say, it definitely didn't disappoint! The book celebrates female single hood as a time of joy and made me question my internalized need to end it so my life would feel complete. I'm just sad Shani didn't narrate her own book as I find her voice lovely and expressive.
