Historia
I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

This left me looking for News articles…so believable
Revisado: 08-17-24
I don’t generally like fictional stories but every one at work was talking about it so….
In the build up of characters)the beginnings) I rolled my eyes and thought how predictable this was going to be. I had stopped listening until a coworker asked how it was going. I had no real answer so I faked it saying “great”. Since i was going to be asked about it, I continued on with the book. I found myself angry with the wife and pissed i had to keep listening….Im soooo glad I did!!!
the writing of the story is masterful. the twists are believable, and i now am interested in the follow up.
The only criticism would be that when i do read fiction, There is some interesting occupation, travel, hobby or something that is learned about. these characters didn’t seem to have anything interesting about them other than the unfortunate relationships that seemed to come together out of one character we don’t really know…but It works and i hope there is a backstory

interesting, a story within a story…
Revisado: 12-17-22
I loved the twists but all the explaining in to make things fit (from Verity) was not always easy for me to accept. also, anytime you put your fingers in someone’s mouth unwanted, they will be bitten nearly off…js
overall I liked it but i would like to have seen better methods used for a more plausible outcome at the end.
Interestingly, I look forward to a sequel.

A sobering look from her view at the effects of mean spirited politics thwarting everything from the safety of her family to the Health of our nations children.

Historia
In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

validating...insightiful...saddening
Revisado: 08-26-18
as an African-American woman reading this gave what we call nowadays "receipts " for the many decades of Blacks needing to constantly play the "race card".
It brings to light the manipulating forces who worked hard to maintain racial prejudices and ensure in particular that through the laws of this land that Blacks would largely remain an underclass.
Its profoundly saddening to realize, especially these past few years, that just like that, we have leadership in office who maintain much of the same biases towards blacks and are putting in place laws that they hope to ensure my place in a permanent underclass...or worse.

Historia
Why exactly Charley Bordelon's late father left her eight hundred sprawling acres of sugarcane land in rural Louisiana is as mysterious as it was generous. Recognizing this as a chance to start over, Charley and her 11-year-old daughter, Micah, say good-bye to Los Angeles. They arrive just in time for growing season but no amount of planning can prepare Charley for a Louisiana that's mired in the past: as her judgmental but big-hearted grandmother tells her, cane farming is always going to be a white man's business.

great story
Revisado: 08-20-17
the television series version on Oprahs network is if course a much richer, in depth, and very nuanced version of the story. the characters and their backgrounds are different or dont exist on screen but thats a good thing.
i was very glad to not be exactly rehashing the television show...and super surprised about Ralph-Angels course.
Another thing about Queen Sugar is family
dynamics and the outcome of sibling relationships based on poor adult decisions tgat affected their lives. its not so much the decisions, but the lack of emotional support and understanding to help Ralph-Angel to better navigate life. instead, his aunt operated out of guilt/shame about how she came to raise him and never held him accountable for his behaviors...
i loved the story but was annoyed by the narrators need to have super perfect pronouncing of every word.

Revisado: 06-15-17
i am a fan of kevin hart; i think he is hilarious and brilliantly insightful. i loved the book and i recommend it....but....with a note of caution. it has parts (very few) that made me nearly return the book. his references to women as B@#$%*s and occasional graphic references to oral sex when least expected caused me pause . i think he is highly intelligent which is why i found it disappointing he couldnt articulate those areas different.
hence my rating of the book is one star shy of brilliant

fantastically engaging
Revisado: 12-11-16
this story intrigued, informed, entertained and more...I loved the journey of lifeTrevor took us through while at the same time giving insights to South African apartheid. much of the history and experiences of black South Africa mirrored what life in the ghetto or now known as "The hood" was like and to some degree remains. I think of practices like "red lining" where your zip code walled you in. not to be out done by policing tactics that did more to contain than to protect and serve.
I wish he had talked more about his lead up to the daily show and those experiences too...perhaps we should look out for a second book?

Born Bright, C. Nicole Mason's powerful memoir, is a story of reconciliation, constrained choices, and life on the other side of the tracks. Born in the 1970s in Los Angeles, California, Mason was raised by a beautiful but volatile 16-year-old single mother. Early on, she learned to navigate between an unpredictable home life and school, where she excelled. By high school, Mason was seamlessly straddling two worlds.

important read!
Revisado: 11-06-16
a powerful life story of importance for many with important conclusions for all
her personal story resonates with many, including me, as I have a similar background.
her focus is on policy as the main culprit responsible for the disparate conditions of the poor. I agree it was and still is a huge factor. growing up in the time frame Dr.Mason talks about, we had no real understanding and knowledge of what was going on and no real power to make changes. today however, there is understanding and knowledge available for all through the Internet, books, etc... yet the people who need it most are unable to get and use the information they desperately need to help them move forward.
she gives great necessary policy strategies in the end and I support them...
I do however wonder what to do about the terrible familial relationships that are also a huge contributor to disparate conditions and cause poor outcomes to the point that only one family member makes it out from several generations...
I think we have to burn the candle from both ends...the societal end and then more personally the immediate family end. intergenerational transmission of issues has that crabs in a barrel effect on families and it kills the spirit of youngsters.
my only criticism is that I had to get use to the narrator. I felt like she enunciated too perfectly. I envisioned her as a very prim and proper person telling the story of a poor person and for this story (until the last two chapters) I personally would have preferred a slightly less formal narrator.
