Historia
Learn the inside scoop on Watergate, the Ford Pardon, and the 18-minute Gap. Roger Stone, The New York Times best-selling author of The Man Who Killed Kennedy: The Case Against LBJ, gives the inside scoop on Nixon’s rise and fall in Watergate in his new book Nixon’s Secrets. Stone charts Nixon’s rise from election to Congress in 1946 to the White House in 1968 after his razor-thin loss to John Kennedy in 1960, his disastrous campaign for Governor of California in 1962, and the greatest comeback in American Presidential history.

Poor writing, poor narration, poor everything
Revisado: 02-03-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A better written narrative along with a narrator from the 2000's instead of the 1940's.
Would you ever listen to anything by Roger Stone and Mike Colapietro again?
No way.
What didn’t you like about Stephen Hoye’s performance?
It was too old fashioned and the cadence was too choppy.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Regret for purchasing it.

Historia
In this Hugo-nominated novel, an alien walks into a museum and asks if he can see a paleontologist. But the arachnid ET hasn't come aboard a rowboat with the Pope and Stephen Hawking (although His Holiness does request an audience later). Landing at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the spacefarer, Hollus, asks to compare notes on mass extinctions with resident dino-scientist Thomas Jericho.

Surprisingly Good

Would you consider the audio edition of Calculating God to be better than the print version?
No idea but this audio version is fantastic.
What other book might you compare Calculating God to and why?
No idea but it must now rank as one of my all time favorite books. Robert J. Sawyer is brilliant, entertaining, insightful, and surprising. Sawyer yokes together scientific, religious, historical and philosophical concepts in an easy and wonderful way. This book will become an annual read for me.
What does Jonathan Davis and Robert J. Sawyer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
They bring a lightness and vibrancy that one might not get reading on their own. Davis was very good and fun to listen to.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Virtually every moment but probably the moment i was hooked was when Hollis (sp? since I I only listened and didn't read) first appeared at the main desk of the ROM and asked for a paleontologist.

Historia
Today when you factor in the interest on the national debt from past wars and total defense expenditures the United States spends almost 40% of its federal budget on the military. It accounts for over 46% of total world arms spending. Before World War II it spent almost nothing on defense and hardly anyone paid any income taxes. You can't have big wars without big government. Such big expenditures are now threatening to harm the national economy.

Would you consider the audio edition of The War State to be better than the print version?
I only heard the audio version and had not read the print so I don't have an opinion.
Who was your favorite character and why?
There are no characters in this book. This book is more of an historical narrative and expose so no characters.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The performance was okay, not great.
Any additional comments?
An old mentor once told me that 'to the naive, things appear to be simple; and to the fool so complex'. The author poses a hypothesis that the federal defense budget is supported by the military-industrial complex. He supports his hypothesis with strong historical facts, written and recorded history and through a complex history of the cold war. His subject is highly complex but he weaves his story very well and with compelling force.
I for one can't wait for his next book.

Historia
From the former secretary of defense, a strikingly candid, vivid account of serving Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. When Robert M. Gates received a call from the White House, he thought he'd long left Washington politics behind: After working for six presidents in both the CIA and the National Security Council, he was happily serving as president of Texas A&M University. But when he was asked to help a nation mired in two wars and to aid the troops doing the fighting, he answered what he felt was the call of duty.

You will be impressed
Revisado: 04-22-14
Where does Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Near the top. The story and the performance were both very strong. I had no opinion of Robert M. Gates before I read this book. Now, I have an opinion and it is very positive.
What did you like best about this story?
At first, the inside story on the administrations of Bush and Obama but in the end his compassion for the soldiers; the men and women who gave all for this country.
Have you listened to any of George Newbern and Robert M. Gates ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No other George Newbern performances and no other Robert M. Gates books.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
While I most looked forward to his comments about the two presidents he served, I was blown away by his temperate and even handed dealing of the two very different men.
Any additional comments?
During his tenure in office, there was much in the news about Robert Gates that I can recall; I did not pay much attention to him when he was in office. I am sorry now that I didn't. Having read Duty, I am very impressed by the man, his accomplishments, his heart, determination, his character and his poise.
I for one, hope that this great nation will always have people like Robert M. Gates to serve the people.
