Historia
By March 4, 1865, the Civil War had slaughtered more than 700,000 Americans. After a morning of rain-drenched fury, tens of thousands crowded Washington’s Capitol grounds that day to see Abraham Lincoln take the oath for a second term. As the sun emerged, Lincoln rose to give perhaps the greatest inaugural address in American history, stunning the nation by arguing, in a brief 701 words, that both sides had been wrong, and that the war’s unimaginable horrors - every drop of blood spilled - might well have been God’s just verdict on the national sin of slavery.

Powerful and moving, this work will stand the test of time!
Revisado: 03-02-25
Lincoln is a man I admire greatly, I have studied his life and read many accounts of his character and convictions. Achorn has put together a masterful telling of Lincoln and the crucial time of the Civil War. Including details I haven’t heard before, I have even more appreciation for the man he was, and for his determination to do what was right. As the book draws to a close and I know Lincoln will be killed, I wonder again, “What if….?”

Gripping and true! It NEVER should have happened!!!
Revisado: 02-11-25
I first heard about the Osage murders years ago when I saw the movie “The FBI Story.” Now I know the movie was just the tip of the iceberg! Nobody will ever know how many members of the Osage tribe were murdered in the quest to gain control of their immense wealth from the oil fields of Oklahoma. Such a sad saga, such a dark page in the history of the United States.

A bit confusing, but well worth sorting out!
Revisado: 02-01-25
As other reviewers say, there are multiple storylines woven together. Choose the method that works best for you and your learning style. I chose to rewind frequently, and usually enjoyed listening the second or third time as much or more than the first. I guess one could say I savored this book. I enjoyed spending time with the characters, and found the conclusions of the various stories to be satisfying and not rushed. I’m certain that spending time with Jack must have convinced Elodie not to go through with the wedding that was being planned for her.
I enjoyed the book, and now that I have finished it, I know I will miss spending time at Birchwood Manor! This one goes into my favorites category!

Historia
Since William the Conqueror, duke of Normandy, crossed the English Channel in 1066 to defeat King Harold II and unite England’s various kingdoms, 41 kings and queens have sat on Britain’s throne. “Shining examples of royal power and majesty alongside a rogue’s gallery of weak, lazy, or evil monarchs,” as Tracy Borman describes them in her sparkling chronicle, Crown & Sceptre.

Excellent and comprehensive account!
Revisado: 12-22-24
This is the book I’ve been looking for! Individual biographies of the royals that stand alone leave it to the reader to make the historical connections. Ms Borman gives a chronological overview of every king and queen since the concept of royalty in England. Her biographical accounts are concise yet comprehensive in a way that only someone with vast historical knowledge of the country could put together. Finally I have an understanding of the civil wars that brought about the execution of a king and the years without a reigning royal. Oliver Cromwell was a far more complex man than I had realized. And I finally found out how the Hanovarians came to be royal in England! If only history textbooks were written by Ms Borman, the majority of students would not only grasp the concepts, they would love to go to history class! Thank you, Ms B!!!

A story that reels you in.
Revisado: 10-26-24
Excellent narrator! Story was very good, but I was disappointed when I figured out the primary mystery hours before it was formally revealed. But there were other parts to the mystery that I did not suspect until they were revealed in the story, so I didn’t feel the story was completely spoiled. The characters seem real, and the relationships were solid. I thoroughly enjoyed the hours spent listening! Will look forward to more books by this author.

I wish I could review the two books separately.
Revisado: 10-18-24
The first book is excellent! Totally five stars all the way. I found the second book’s ending to be predictable, except for the involvement of one character. In both books the characters are believable and compelling. I love that children are important to the stories and the author has them acting exactly like children of their ages really act. I thoroughly enjoyed living in during and after the Civil War while listening to both books!

Historia
This is a captivating historical mystery, infused with romance, that links the lives of three women across a century - two deep in the past, one in the present - to the doomed passenger liner, RMS Lusitania.... Her finances are in dire straits, and best-selling author Sarah Blake is struggling to find a big idea for her next book. Desperate, she breaks the one promise she made to her mother and opens an old chest that belonged to her great-grandfather, who died when the RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German U-boat in 1915. What she discovers there could change history.

Excellent historical novel!
Revisado: 10-05-24
This book resides permanently on my favorites list because the characters are believable and the sinking if the Lusitania is inevitable. The authors have woven together mystery and intrigue enough to keep me listening for hours with anticipation, even though I’ve listened to the book before.
Spoiler alert!!! This book ends the only way possible. Even though Robert has loved Caroline from afar for ten years, she has steadfastly loved her husband even when she loved Robert, too. When her husband dies after the ship sinks, Robert realizes his continued presence in her life will inspire guilt, not the love he wants. And that allows him to marry Tess and give her the kind if life the reader wants for her!

I’m not usually a mystery fan, but this story kept me engaged throughout. The characters are well developed and likable, and I really appreciate the addition of a character who is on the autism spectrum who is believable.
When I started listening to this story I thought it was a short book. It’s not short, but the story was so compelling that I put other things aside so I could keep listening.

Stories held my attention throughout. Author extols the medical profession of the past generation, comparing a time when medical attention centered around the needs of the patient, whereas today’s medicine is dictated by the PROFIT MOTIVE. Individual needs are forgotten if they don’t add up to money.
