In ten years when we look back, this book will stand out as beginning the process of exposing an inhuman medical experiment enacted on children due to a moment of cultural insanity as absurd as the Salem witch trials or 20th Century eugenics.

I don’t want to hear about American bible beliefs. After reading another trilogy, written by this author that was absolutely one of the best trilogies I’ve read in a long time, I was really surprised. There was so much religious stuff in this book. This really doesn’t go down well with Australians or people who live outside the US. Otherwise I would’ve given this five stars. I’m hoping that it’s part of a long-term character arc and this guy actually loses his religion I will read on because again I like the authors style and the action and the characters.

…going to be challenged, outraged and inspired. Bindel pulls no punches. She blowers you away with what feminism is and why it’s needed more than anything ever in a world where p*rn and men in bad wigs want to control and erase women.

I liked this book more than book 4. Maybe because I felt the stakes were higher and the situations were almost impossible to get out of, but Joe with his monkey brain always manages to think of something.

If I could give this 10 stars, I would. It made me laugh, made me feel hopeless and then triumphant, it tore out my heart and then put it back together. Just read it. If you feel nothing, check your pulse.

I love this series so much I’m on a mission to binge them all in as short a time possible. Wish me luck! I’ll have a serious book hangover once I’ve finished.

I am a serious Gideon the Ninth fan. I've read it numerous times. I have a Pinterest shrine to Gideon set up, with hundreds of gorgeous GtN fan art pictures. So you can imagine I was seriously looking forward to Harrow.

But this...this thing.

Nope.

Harrow did not work for me. The weird second-person narrative felt like the author wanted to try something flashy or er...literary. That didn't work. Harrow did't win the Hugo.

And OMFG, the silly notes Harrow left for her (brain-altered) self that amounted to...nothing. Nope, didn't work for me, either. The soup thing? I don't get it and I really do NOT CARE enough to want to get. Ianthe - I still hate her.

The new characters did not even come close to caste of GtN. In fact, Mercymorn can go launch herself out an airlock and implode, I HATED her. She almost made me stop reading. And whilst dad-bod, immortal god John was a great idea, it just fell flat.

The last quarter of the book FINALLY picks up the action and offers a bit of what we all loved about GtN - but I really don't think it's pay off for wading through the dreck of the first three quarters.

I'm now torn as to whether I'll read Alecto the Ninth when it comes out next year (2022). Yes, I get Muir is Kiwi and they are a quirky mob, but I'll be waiting to see the reviews of Alecto before parting with hard-earned Aussie cash.

Breathtaking, non-stop action finale to the Odin Longknife series. So many twists and turns, betrayals, unexpected alliances and well...sacrifices.

Another fabulous series by MR Forbes that I thoroughly recommend to anyone who loves fast-action space opera with characters you can seriously relate to, cheer for and mourn.

Excellent narration by Jeffrey Kafer as always.

Many thanks to Michael Forbes (the author) for this ARC audiobook.

You rock, Michael. Keep writing.

Action, twists, characters to relate to

Revisado: 03-12-20

I'll make no secret of this: I read just about everything MR Forbes puts out.

Whilst the Forgotten Earth saga and Hayden Duke are my faves, Stars End marks a leap into a new universe for me. I wasn't disappointed.

Rather than rehashing the plot, I'll tell you what worked for me.

Navy pilot Grayson Stone is a middle aged dude with a family he loves. He's ticking off the years until retirement in an outpost of the galaxy where not much happens. He loves his wife and kids. He has a past he's hidden. He's partnered with a much younger female pilot and treats her like a daughter, rather than a creepy sleaze.

The character is easy to relate to and cheer for. You get a glimpse of his ordinary world as it gets torn apart and he's thrown from one situation to the next.

The supporting characters have Forbes's usual mix of morally grey people with their own agendas, often at odds with Grayson's, and a few complete self-important a*seholes who do dumb things and thankfully, learn quick or get killed. Then there's the alien menace which is nicely foreshadowed and revealed.

The pace is fast, but with enough breathing space for world building and characterisation.

I will warn you that the book ends on a cliffhanger. Jeffery Kafer's narration of the audiobook is excellent. I wish the next one was out.

*I was given a review copy of the audiobook by the author. This is an honest review. I totally loved the book and will be heading straight into the next one on my Kindle
