Historia
By age twenty-four, Letty Davenport has seen more action and uncovered more secrets than many law enforcement professionals. Now a recent Stanford grad with a master’s in economics, she’s restless and bored in a desk job for U.S. Senator Colles. Letty’s ready to quit, but her skills have impressed Colles, and he offers her a carrot: feet-on-the-ground investigative work, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security.

Political Crap Is Stupid, Inconsistent, Biased And Unnecessary…
Revisado: 07-01-22
I have read every one Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers. When he got political is was more Left than Right, but that was based on Minnesota political reality.
The “Gun Control” stuff was always couched in the same sense that the whiny cops (and I’m retired from a large Southern California Department) in urban settings have accepted the unrealistic expectations that cops somehow “prevent bad things from happening”.
BS
But the offset was Davenport’s realization that the cold hard facts don’t always win in courtrooms where reality is as much fiction as the oft-repeated lie, “innocent until proven guilty”.
Ha!
People are guilty or innocent, or more likely, some of both. But nobody is “innocent until proven ——“. That line is a legal fiction that only works in law school.
People are guilty or innocent based on what they have done. Their legal status is more dependent upon the legal representation they can afford, or the publicity they can milk out of the lame-stream-media.
Davenport crosses lines I would never cross. But Sandford always liked to have his fantasy and reality perfectly laid out, and Lucas always on the side of the angels, even if he had a distinctive demonic streak.
In novels, the truth always gets to be what the author says it is….
Now Sandford decides to crap on the Second Amendment, while his favorite people get to carry whatever weapons he decides are “reasonable”, and here he absolutely craps in his own kitchen. He manages to misrepresent a major part of a once loyal readership.
I’ll waste no more time or money on political grandstanding that can’t distinguish the street level reality of January 6, 2021 from the “mostly peaceful” riots and P.O.S.’s my sisters and brothers in blue have had to absorb.
Hey John Sandford, you are officially a political hack. Cops know better than to EVER mix politics and police work. There are NO “political” cops! There are cops and there are politicians. The only ones who think they are both, are lying to themselves.
Which brings us back to this piece of trash. Real cops won’t be buying or reading any more of this.
Retire. You are a rich bastard. Quit before you destroy whatever goodwill you might have left.
Sad to see an excellent writer drink the Kool-Aid.

Not quite the same....
Revisado: 08-30-18
Silva must be wanting to return to his job with the Washington political/pundit/pseudo-journalists.
This was historically interesting and could have been GREAT, instead, with the #fakenews influence, it became rather pedestrian.
I hope future installments will return to honest observation rather than globalist fantasies.

Historia
A businessman snatched from an Upper East Side street in broad daylight. A miniature hangman's noose left at the scene. A nine-year-old girl, the only witness to the crime. With a crime scene this puzzling, forensic expertise of the highest order is absolutely essential. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are called in to investigate. Soon the case takes a stranger turn: A recording surfaces of the victim being slowly hanged, his desperate gasps the backdrop to an eerie piece of music. The video is marked as the work of The Composer...

Politics Dims the Bright Light of Lincoln
Revisado: 07-13-17
Would you try another book from Jeffery Deaver and/or Edoardo Ballerini?
I have read every Lincoln Rhyme novel and loved all but the last two.
Would you ever listen to anything by Jeffery Deaver again?
I am addicted, so I probably read the rest, unless I give up on Deaver's departures.
Have you listened to any of Edoardo Ballerini’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Never before, but his performance was truly rapturous. All things being equal, I would choose to listen to Mr. Ballerini over most other narrators.
Was The Burial Hour worth the listening time?
The science, as always, is good, but the policing techniques are sliding, and the political turn seems to be more important than getting the procedures right.
I don't care what Deaver's politics are, and clearly, I never did. As a law enforcement officer, I made a covenant with the public I served, to set aside my preferences when I put on the uniform and stood behind the badge.
However much I might have been troubled by the motivations of the politicians, I did my level best to enforce the spirit of the law and truly, earnestly, serve the people. When policing becomes "just a job", it is time to find another job.
So, when Deaver begins to not only state the facts, but starts injecting political bias and opinion into a Lincoln Rhyme story.... I mean, Rhyme??? The guy who embodies, "Just the facts!!!!" ?????
Come on!!! But the final gross indignity to the characters is foisted on Amelia Sachs. The expert shooter, the procedural and technical ace... does a Hollywood stunt shot????
Sorry. Mr Deaver, you disgraced the character, and frankly, it was rather sexist. As though, because Amelia was a woman, and because the political ramifications would look bad, she totally leaves reality and risks the safety of the crowd of people she is there to protect???
The old Amelia Sachs would have taken the right shot, and then done everything possible to save the life of the subject. The "real" Lincoln Rhyme would have suspended her immediately. And readers who care about this series, like me, had to suspend our belief...on the spot.
Any additional comments?
I am just very disappointed that a brilliant writer like Mr. Deaver chooses to destroy his legacy instead of separating his politics from his product. Of course, he IS an author, NOT a cop, and can do whatever he likes! I just found it disappointing.
In fairness, the first 80% of the story is excellent, and the narration by Mr. Ballerini is rapturous! I will look for his narrations, and recommend that you listen to the book for that, even though I am so disappointed in the deviations by the author.
To keep everything in perspective, of course, the object of a novel is to spend a few hours transported to an imaginary place, or at least a place of imagination, and for that purpose, the first 80% of the novel was great, even if the departures made the book's departure a bit of a disappointment.
I hope Mr. Deaver will return to his successful formula in the future, and avoid the political soapbox.
In closing, I would be remiss if I did not profusely thank the author for the many, many hours of entertainment I have enjoyed from the Lincoln Rhyme series.

After the events in Gathering Prey, Lucas Davenport finds himself in a very unusual situation - no longer employed by the Minnesota BCA. His friend, the governor, is just cranking up a presidential campaign, though, and he invites Lucas to come along as part of his campaign staff. "Should be fun!" he says, and it kind of is - until they find they have a shadow: an armed man intent on killing the governor...and anyone who gets in the way.

Election Upset
Revisado: 12-06-16
I love John Sandford's writing. His political "intrigue" is a bit too predictable for me, and his police procedurals have long since disappeared. But his descriptions of people, his storylines, and his understanding of the Minnesota liberals are always entertaining!
I have come to prefer his "Virgil Flowers" books, but there is just enough of a sense of justice in his writing to keep me coming back.
I hope Lucas gets to keep his marshal's badge, even though "the Secretary" lost her election.
Maybe he can work a decent conservative into one of these storylines.
Some of us actually did the job and had a wonderful time in law enforcement. Some of us are even female and ethnic minorities!
Ah! Don't let that ruin your narratives!
BTW - Ferrone has a wonderful voice and gives life to amazing characters.

Definitely the best in this series. Colonel Taylor is rounding into form and gets better with each installment. Obviously his contact with the squids at NWS lifted him above what he might have otherwise become!

I believe there is no more powerful combination of writer and reader than Johnson and Guidall.
I have listened to every book in the series, and watched every show in the TV series.
Johnson tells stories that wring every emotion in my heart and soul. As a retired cop, I deeply appreciate the combination of brutal truths and moral ambiguities that are the result of our human condition.
It just sounds so much better the way Johnson tells it, and when Guidall voices it!
Thank you both for the rare treasure that is "Longmire".....

Revisado: 01-09-15
Love the narration. Some of Lescroart's cop knowledge leaves a lot to be desired, but -- as are tired cop -- if you really made it realistic, you'd want to retire too!
Don't like his representation of how cops feel about the rest of the populace, kind of stays on the cynic side....
But his storylines are good, if predictable, and enjoyable.
