Historia
It's the end of the 19th century in San Francisco's Chinatown, and ghost hunters from the Maoshan traditions of Daoism keep malevolent spiritual forces at bay. Li-lin, the daughter of a renowned Daoshi exorcist, is a young widow burdened with yin eyes - the unique ability to see the spirit world. Her spiritual visions and the death of her husband bring shame to Li-lin and her father - and shame is not something this immigrant family can afford.

Kick a** characters, action & emotional punch
Revisado: 05-18-22
The narrator's native fluidity with Chinese was the cherry on top of a kind of story we never get to hear. Her range nearly encompasses very distinct voices female and male, young and old. As a historical fiction/fantasy about immigrant Chinese told through the eyes of a young female Daoist priestess, this is the first exploration I've read of what gender, duty, spiritual and generational assimilation struggles might look like among Asian immigrants. I LOVED it.

Historia
It's the end of the 19th century. San Francisco's cobblestone streets are haunted, but Chinatown has an unlikely protector in a young Daoist priestess named Li-lin. Using only her martial arts training, spiritual magic, a sword made from peachwood, and the walking, talking spirit of a human eye, Li-lin stands alone to defend her immigrant community from supernatural threats. But when the body of a young girl is brought to the deadhouse Li-lin oversees for a local group of gangsters, she faces her most bewildering - and potentially dangerous - assignment yet.

The best of so many worlds...
Revisado: 05-18-22
Both the story and the narration wove together to create a truly natural feeling flow I didn't want to stop. I had worried the second book might have nothing left to say because the first one was so powerful. It didn't take long for that worry to evaporate! Some of the most difficult issues including family relations, race, gender, class, tradition, selfhood, and sacrifice are portrayed with such starkly simple and elegant lines, I found myself being able to view my own struggles with all these issues through a compassionate and clear lens. Meanwhile the story what's compelling, the characters were deeply engaging, and I wish so much there were more books by this author and more readings by this narrator. I wish we had more stories like this.

Historia
A thousand years have passed since a dragon has been seen in the world. Science and technology have replaced magic, which has dwindled until it has become little more than an element of myth and legend. There are those who still have dragon blood flowing through their veins, distant descendants of the mighty creatures of old. These rare humans have the power to cast magic, the power to heal, and the power to craft alchemical weapons capable of starting wars...or ending them.

I'll be seeking out the next in the series.
Revisado: 09-21-21
Good character voices, good reading pace, and an easy to listen to voice made listening very enjoyable. There were very few mispronunciations and even when something was pronounced a little strangely it was believable within the context of the story. it was a fun set stories and rewarding to be able to get all three in a row. I'll be seeking out the next in the series and other things read by this voice actor as well.

Historia
Shelby works as a dog walker in northern California, and she’s just finished up her bi-weekly trip to the park with a husky named Pluto. When she brings him back to his house, she finds his owner - Todd Burke, a well-known local businessman and founder of an organic supplements company - lying on the bathroom floor, dead. A detective arrives on the scene. As she interviews Shelby, the body is inspected by a medical examiner, and more cops search Todd’s home, it becomes clear that the victim’s life was less picture-perfect than his clean-cut persona might lead you to believe.

I listen to audiobooks to stay awake while driving long distances. This book was highly entertaining, with just a a little bit of tension to keep it interesting. I laughed a lot and groaned at some of the jokes. It was well-read bye Angela Daw

The best narration I've ever had the pleasure...
Revisado: 04-05-21
...of listening to. I'm blown away by the depth of performance. Even the occasional narration didn't bother me, it was so believable as just that character's way of speaking.
As for the story itself, Jim Butcher has the knack for writing relatable characters and pages - turner action. Highly entertaining.

Permission to be capable, competent, have heart
Revisado: 08-03-20
Neatly captures the female struggle to believe self worth is okay, and to be recognized and heard by others. It is a visceral experience of finding the spaces and actions which are true to one's personal inspiration. The romantic desire to be cherished strikes a captivating tension between who a person fundamentally is and what a person socially is.
The reader is great. Occasionally her lack of familiarity shows in mispronounced words, but the expression, pacing, and tone do the writing justice.
The story is a page turner, so to speak. I had a hard time putting it down to go to sleep!
