How come?
Revisado: 02-16-25
I’m wondering how did this book win the Gold Dagger. Seems there’s no plot whatsoever.
And I don’t know if it’s the story or the way the narrator is reading it, but you can’t so much notice where the story switches between timelines.

Historia
It is barely three months since the murder of his wife and Thomas Lynley takes to the South-West Coast Path in Cornwall, determined to walk its length in an attempt to distract himself from his loss. On the 43rd day of this walk, he sees a cliff climber fall to his death, apparently witnessed by a surfer in a nearby cove. Shortly afterwards, Lynley encounters a young woman from Bristol whose personal history is a blank before her 13th year. These events propel him into a case that brings Barbara Havers from London....

Not sure what is it about
Revisado: 02-16-25
I’m halfway through the book, and still can’t figure out what is it about. A boy is found dead, sure, then the next thing you get is a bunch of different characters introduced in a way that you have no idea who is who. And in the meantime the main story (which I presume is to find out how did this boy end up dead and if someone helped him) is not moving an inch.
I picked this book following Crispin Redman. As much as I enjoyed his easy breezy switching between accents and intonations, it felt too me that he was reading too fast for no good reason.
I didn’t finish listening and I doubt I’ll get back to this book.

Unknown to anyone, Fabel's deputy, Maria Klee, also heads for Cologne to hunt down a different, even more dangerous killer - one with whom she has a score to settle. Taras Buslenko, a Ukrainian special-forces commander, prepares his undercover unit for a "black" operation into Cologne.

Other instalments are much better
Revisado: 12-28-24
It’s my third encounter with Jan Fabel and so far it’s the weakest instalment in the whole saga.
As usual, Craig Russell introduces several characters and alternates their individual stories, making each a possible suspect only to let all pieces fall in place at the end. It’s just that this time, you’re able to figure out who kills and why somewhere halfway through the story and you start getting bored.
Also, the killer clown that’s supposed to be the main character in the book, at least based on it’s synopsis, is rather a side story squeezed into another, not so plausible, story of a search for a Ukrainian mobster.
Overall, other instalments are way better. This one is not terrible but nothing great.

Boring, disappointing, nothing like Harry Hole stories
Revisado: 09-14-24
The plot is stretched so much that you lose interest and struggle to finish.
The main protagonist and narrator tells too many unrelated stories from his past or makes long monologues, all irrelevant to the main story, that make you forget what the main plot was. And the main plot is flat and at places very predictable.
Add to it Sean Barrett’s voice that’s way more monotonous than ever, and for some reason very slow. I played this audio on 1.7x speed to go through.
If you have spare Audible credits and don’t know what to do with them or if you’re a die hard fan of Nesbo then this audiobook is for you, otherwise give it a pass. It’s not any close to Harry Hole’s series and Barrett’s performance is very disappointing.
Nesbo’s “Headhunters” and “The Son” are much better than this one.

Historia
What is it about the top tech product companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Netflix, and Tesla that enables their record of consistent innovation? Most people think it's because these companies are somehow able to find and attract a level of talent that makes this innovation possible. But the real advantage these companies have is not so much who they hire, but rather how they enable their people to work together to solve hard problems and create extraordinary products.

Am I the only one who didn’t feel amazed by this book?
Revisado: 07-06-24
Don’t get me wrong, this book mentions many valid points that’s hard to disagree with, it’s just that it sounds a lot like a checklist of common sense principals and nothing like any practical advice.
Just like any similar book, Empowered is unnecessarily stretched with many repetitions. I understand they needed a minimum volume of words to make a book and not a blog post but it still could’ve been done better. It’s hard to understand what point did the author want to make.
Finally, they could’ve hired a professional to read this book. Nothing wrong with Marty except for his voice, usually arrogant and lively, suits better an insomnia therapy book instead of this one.

Less talk, more action please!
Revisado: 07-25-21
Nesbo & Barrett combo guarantee pretty good entertainment and, if you're a fan of either of them, you won't regret this purchase. Having said that, I must warn you that "The Son" is far worse than any of the Harry Hole instalments.
Publisher's summary says "Sonny wants revenge. He needs to break out of prison and make those responsible pay for their crimes. Whatever the cost."
I'm halfway through the book and got no idea what is the main protagonist trying to do and who is he after. It feels like this "revenge" is a side dish to him strolling in the streets of Oslo and discovering the world again after 12 years of imprisonment. The plot is somewhat diluted with meaningless scenes and dialogs, good enough to make me want to listen it till the end, otherwise nothing special.
If they'll ever make a movie based on this novel, I recommend Jason Statham for the main role. It'll fit his acting skills.

No idea what is this book about
Revisado: 07-19-21
I'm on the third chapter and still got no idea what is this book about. I mean, there's some guy (no idea who) and there's some crime in some museum but no idea what happened.
I listened to almost all of Jo Nesbo's books read by Sean Barrett and he's by far my favorite Audible narrator but in this book... he simply sucks. I have no idea what is he reading! There's not really any change in intonation or any indication of end/beginning of a chapter. What a mess!
