To begin with, I’m not an absolute fan of Douglas Murray. He’s said several things that I agree with, and several that I don’t. Even in this book, there are things that give me pause— but that’s the point.

You don’t have to absolutely agree absolutely all the time with absolutely everything anyone says in order to take value from that person’s work.

I highly recommend this for anyone who appreciates Western Culture (European Culture— not cowboys and horses) and anyone who doesn’t. It can’t hurt to gain a new perspective and understanding of the world around you.

It is a very, very interesting idea. The description of the library is quite wonderful. It’s a unique way of looking at regrets… a sort of… you’re where you are for a reason and you’re where you ought to be.

Interesting, yes.

The author does a great job of “one more thing” through the protagonist’s day leading up to her decision to enter the library. But, to my mind anyway, the author doesn’t do a good job of concluding the story.

There also seems to be a subtle “man bad—unless he’s gay” aspect. That could just be my take on it but, I don’t see any male characters— or not many— who are actually decent people. I mean, there’s one— but the author does nothing with him.

It’s a sort of clumsy book. Lots of cool imagery, trying hard to convey deeper meaning, but missing something essential to stick the landing. I don’t know what that essential thing is, for the life of me, but it’s missing— at least, for me, it’s missing.

The narrator did a good job. She was engaging and really seemed to be acting the part.

I don’t know if I would recommend this book. I mean, yeah, give it a go, if you want, but don’t expect too much. That way you’ll either be pleasantly surprised because it works for you, or you’ll be prepped for it to sound a little hollow.

I most know Simon Farnaby for his acting (and writing) in series like Ghosts (known as Ghosts UK in the states and you should DEFINITELY check it out) and he is hilarious.

His writing for children holds up. I am a little unsure about the sound effects, but the story is so fantastic, I stopped noticing. You will love all of these characters! Absolutely recommend!

Let me preface this with admitting that I’m a fan of Zachary Levi, I was before the book, I’m just a little bit more of one now. I think he’s a talented actor and has always seemed to me to be a decent person. That’s important to me when it comes to being a fan of someone. I may appreciate someone’s work and talent— even if they appear to be a total jerk— but I wouldn’t call myself a fan.

But, whether you’re a fan or not, I think this book has the potential to help those with mental illness. Partly because he openly admits to some behaviors that are not VERY great, and apologizes for them, and exposes the whys of some of that behavior. But he also uses his mistakes and some very personal stories to try to uplift people in similar emotional circumstances, who may not have the resources he does to seek help.

It’s not a perfect book, there are a couple stories that repeat to the point that I thought audible had malfunctioned, but the conclusions to those repeats are worth listening to.

If you’re going to buy a celebrity’s memoirs or a celebrity’s perspective on mental health, I suggest this one.

This book is not anti trans or anything of the sort. It treats people with differing genders and identities AND people who don’t see things the way the author does with respect.

I know that’s a foreign concept in today’s world, but she manages it.

Whether you are trans or not, this book can be a decent way to help you understand the objections to self id, and the history of transgender people.

The author states her opinion, but she handles both sides of the issue with respect and empathy.

I don’t know that ANY narrator can do justice to the story… but so many of them seem to do odd voices for the characters.

In this story, every woman over the age of 30 was done in a gruff, deep, sorta stupid voice. And every child was a simpering hollow voiced creature. And the people around Anne’s own age were high pitched and awkward.

Still. This is the least irritating narrator I’ve heard.

I highly recommend the books, but I hope somebody finds a decent narrator sometime.

Some of the problem is the way she reads for the children. Some of it is the way she tries to change voices for the adults. Some of it is they way she pronounces words incorrectly.

Diana sounds like a sulky youth.

Anne sounds rather dim.

Rachel is done with an almost southern accent— in spots.

I’m sure the narrator did her best, and perhaps with a different story (without children of any sort in it) she might be quite good.

But the story is worth listening to and Anne is a heroine to root for.

Like so many others reviewing this title, I LOVE the story and the characters, but I am confused by how bad the narrator is.

I won’t spend too much time on the narrator though because my complaints might overshadow the brilliance of the author.

Ms. McAdams is a pretty decent actress, especially when they let her do comedy, and her voice would be a good match for the text, but her tone and inflection suck. She misses golden opportunities to linger on the rich tapestry of nature and characters L.M. Montgomery wrote. Unfortunately I have not found a decent narrator for any of the books in this series so maybe just pick up the book if you can.

It is evident throughout the book that L.M. Montgomery understood womanhood, girlhood, and was deeply infatuated with the natural world.

Her descriptions might be overly flowery by today’s standards but it’s almost like reading poetry mixed in with a book about a desolate young girl who never fails to hope, and I am here for her descriptions.

Anne is one of the best literary heroines because she feels the tragedies of her earliest years (and sometimes revels in the misery of new ones) but she still manages to hope with her whole heart. As a child reading it, you can’t help wanting to be like her. As an adult, you can’t help adoring her for her goodness and the light she brings.

It can be bittersweet to read it as an adult, but it is worthwhile nonetheless because it helps you remember, it almost gives you connection to your own youth again so that maybe, just maybe, there might still be hope.

I am not eloquent enough to praise the works of Tolkien a fourth time (I've listened to/read these books more times than I'd care to admit and left reviews on the other books) except to say that it is beautiful.

I am also not able to scrape together enough new words to praise Andy Serkis for his performance. I believe he really loves this work, or else he's just so talented he can crank out absolute gold even if he's bored.

Get these works if you can, it is like an old radio show-- except they haven't abridged it or changed it for time constraints.

I have been a fan to Tolkien's work for as long as I've known it. From the animated features when I was very young, to the books when I was old enough to pick them up and read them for myself.

His stories and characters touch on universal topics and explore what it is to be human-- even if only one race is actually classified as Men. There is a reason these books have held on so long and it isn't just us nerds buying every scrap of lore made available. Anyone who gives these books a try is going to find something that resonates.

The movies, beautiful as they are in design and composition, DO NOT capture it. I know loads of people have trouble reading through the books, they feel too dense, too boring and settle for the movies to learn the story of Frodo and Aragorn and Sam and Legolas and Gandalf and Pippin and Merry and Gimli and Boromir (I could not leave out any member of the Fellowship).

This version of the audiobook is a perfect balance. Mr. Serkis PERFORMS this story with so much heart and breathes so much life into the characters that you feel as if you're watching a film, but you get the true characters and Tolkien's beautiful words.

I cannot tell you how many times I have tread the paths of Middle-Earth but this was like reading it for the first time again. Whether you're a book fan or a movie fan or you like both.... this is an excellent purchase.
