As England enters World War II's dark early days, spirited music professor Primrose Trent, recently arrived to the village of Chilbury, emboldens the women of the town to defy the Vicar's stuffy edict to shutter the church's choir in the absence of men and instead carry on singing. Resurrecting themselves as The Chilbury Ladies' Choir, the women of this small village soon use their joint song to lift up themselves and the community as the war tears through their lives.

This is a vignette of life in an English village during WWII The epistolary style, delivered by different readers for the various characters and their perspectives, is well written and effectively performed.

Engrossing insight and perspective into autism
Revisado: 04-05-25
This book lets the reader inside the mind of someone who is not neurotypical. I deeply appreciate the perspective and insight it provided for me. It’s also an engaging story. The narrator is so believable as Christopher, but also conveys the emotions of the other characters. I will have to go and look at this book in print, as I suspect there are interesting formulas and diagrams, and maybe an appendix. I also want to lean more about the author.

Fun book, hate the narrator
Revisado: 01-25-25
Intersection of two well-known worlds.
The narrator’s voice is insipid. I learned of this book from a reference in a postlude to a later title narrated on Audible by the author and someone else, who is very good. Listen to those and read this one on paper if you’re able.

Engrossing from start to finish
Revisado: 01-04-24
A beautiful book, lyrically read. The imagery and descriptions create a vivid picture for dramatizations to live up to.
Without the written word, it was a little hard to keep some of the characters straight at first, but as the book went on, I got to know them.

Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Margot and James are broken up—for good this time. James made sure of it when he dropped the bomb on Margot: that he doesn’t want kids, ever. Then, on the biggest morning of his life, James—an ambitious lawyer at a high-powered firm—wakes up pregnant. He realizes with dread that he is part of a recent epidemic of men suddenly and inexplicably becoming pregnant. His condition obvious to the higher-ups, James is denied the promotion he was expecting, sending him reeling.

Here are the very personal diaries of Richard E. Grant's debut behind the camera, as writer and director of his autobiographical movie of the same name.
It is both a fascinating insight into the intrigues and agonies he encounters along the way, and also a deeply moving portrait of his childhood and his love affair with Swaziland, where he was born and brought up during the last throes of the British Empire.

Loved the movie and had to read this book
Revisado: 06-17-21
Engrossing backstory about the making of a film. Gives great insight into the process. Hearing the author (also an experienced actor) read his own words relieves any anxiety that the Audible book won’t capture something in the written text, although I did have to keep pausing to look up the many names referenced in the text.
Don’t even try to read the Diaries before watching the film Wah-Wah (which is wonderful!).
