An American frigate, tracking down a ship-sinking monster, faces not a living creature but an incredible invention - a fantastic submarine commanded by the mysterious Captain Nemo. Suddenly a devastating explosion leaves just three survivors, who find themselves prisoners inside Nemo's death ship on an underwater odyssey around the world from the pearl-laden waters of Ceylon to the icy dangers of the South Pole... as Captain Nemo, one of the greatest villians ever created, takes his revenge on all society. Truly a Classic Adventure Story
Revisado: 08-10-18
I really enjoyed this book! There are moments some may find slow such as the constant classification of fish and other sea animals but James Frain did a good job of keeping his voice animated during these sections. This was an excellent adventure beginning to end - it was exciting to imagine exploring all of the world's most inaccessible and magnificent places with not a worry about money or food or shelter. The characters were distinct and engaging. James Frain did a great job narrating - my only nit pick on the narration was a lot of the character voices were very similar.

Narration almost made up for characters
Revisado: 07-31-18
I usually adore Dickens, but the characters were so irritating I could barely finish the book! Even understanding that this was written as a satire on society and government I couldn't stand the characters and the story was far more convoluted than necessary. The narration was incredible and he did a fantastic job with every person.

Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

One of the best dystopian novels
Revisado: 12-20-17
I’m pretty surprised I enjoyed this as much as I did! The past few dystopian novels I’ve read were admittedly well written, but I didn’t enjoy them as much as I expected from classics. This was fantastic. Perhaps it was because it felt less pretentious. The main character is pretty self-aware and his line of thought and doubts were fairly relatable. I also felt that the points being made about humanity felt less holier-than-thou compared to other similar novels. Tim Robbins gave a GREAT performance and his pacing and timing was perfect - it sucked me in and held me there. Excellent pick!

Relatable and Melancholy
Revisado: 12-07-17
I think I got more out of this book with Maggie’s performance behind it. Sometimes I felt rubbed the wrong way and I don’t know if it was the words or the way Maggie said them. Maybe I was supposed to react that way. The first hour or so into it I couldn’t understand why it was a classic - but I’m glad I listened the whole way through. Even in today’s setting you can relate to the topics of mental health, societal pressures and feminism. Good purchase! Might listen again if I’m in a melancholy mood :)

Historia
To 10-year-old Jamie, his family has fallen apart because of the loss of someone he barely remembers: his sister Rose, who died five years ago in a terrorist bombing. To his father, life is impossible to make sense of when he lives in a world that could so cruelly take away a 10-year-old girl. To Rose's surviving 15-year-old twin, Jas, every day she lives in Rose's ever-present shadow, forever feeling the loss like a limb, but unable to be seen for herself alone.

Certainly not a happy feel, but that’s okay
Revisado: 12-05-17
I really enjoyed this. David Tennant was brilliant at vocalizing the child-like, deeply honest, and expressive thoughts of a ten year old in his narration. The story was interesting and most characters were built up nicely. I like that the character development wasn’t straight and positive for everyone - it gave more believability and depth to characters who, like real people, don’t always have a happy ending or move in the right direction. But it’s not unsatisfactory -and it helped build the plot as well as the backstories of characters. There’s something unsettling about hearing how raw and honest a ten year old’s thoughts are and how they may see the world we show them. An interesting view on grief and how we all deal with it differently.

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

More Interesting Than I Thought
Revisado: 12-01-17
I really wasn’t expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. There were multiple times when I had to pause in order to digest a phrase or a thought because it was so poignant. The story is interesting though a little bit slow in some spots. I feel almost like the monster is too eloquent at times....but that is also used to reinforce how the creature is seen as a demon with he complexity of humanity intermingling...I think. Dan Stevens did a good job - the Irish accent at one point did sound German which was interesting but he was articulate and easy to follow and I enjoyed his performance.

Enjoyed it more as the story developed
Revisado: 11-06-17
The first few minutes I really did not want to continue listening. The music was distracting in the first 20 seconds and nothing really....well, happened. But the music dies down very quickly and while the story itself is not fast-paced or character-developing I found myself genuinely interested in finishing.
Again, while the characters aren't given a lot of opportunity to develop in such a short book, I am impressed that you can actually glean bits of personality from each person - you almost feel like you can understand why they say what they say and why they're making certain choices. A lot of questions and backstories go unanswered at the end, but it does not feel unsatisfying. The overall pace is slow, but I think that seems to add to the overall tone of the life of drifting ranch-hands.
Narration was good and you could distinguish the voices.

Do you believe in ghosts? Do we really live on in some conscious form after we die, and is that form capable of communicating with the world of the living? Aye, right. That was Jack Parlabane's stance on the matter, anyway. But this was before he found himself in the more compromising position of being not only dead himself, but worse: dead with an exclusive still to file.

Entertaining from start to finish
Revisado: 06-30-17
I'm a little thick so it took me a few chapters to realize the first person narrative switches between three people - but once that was established I was able to enjoy how well-written, insightful, and witty this book was. Billy Boyd was a lovely narrator although once in a blue moon his Scottish accent slipped through when voicing an American character - this honestly made it sound more charming. If you're looking to buy an easy book which doesn't involve thinking, maybe go in a different direction - there are a lot of political undertones which drive you to do some critical thinking. Overall excellent!

Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

What a Performance!
Revisado: 05-16-17
Oh my goodness. Richard Armitage is incredibly talented.....each character was brought to life and had such unique personalities I sometimes forgot it was one person reading. The story itself can definitely be a little bit slow at times, but I found myself ao invested in the lives of each character I cried when it ended. Beautifully done!
