Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

Skip the Intro by Jeanette Walls

Wonderful reading by author Frank McCourt. Many laugh-out-loud moments. I'd have given it five stars if not for a dull, unecessary introduction by another writer that should have followed the story, not preceded it.

Historia
In Chia-Chia Lin’s debut, The Unpassing, we meet a Taiwanese immigrant family of six struggling to make ends meet on the outskirts of Anchorage, Alaska. The father, hardworking but beaten down, is employed as a plumber and repairman while the mother, a loving, strong-willed, and unpredictably emotional matriarch, holds the house together. When 10-year-old Gavin contracts meningitis at school, he falls into a deep, nearly fatal coma. He wakes up a week later to learn that his little sister Ruby was infected, too. She did not survive.

Narrator's Style Not Suited to Story
Revisado: 05-26-19
I could not listen to Feodor Chin read the story. His delivery, for me, doesn't work for the text. Others may feel differently, but i wish I had not purchased the audio version.

Historia
One of our best-loved actors, Michael Caine has starred in over 100 films in his six-decade career, spanning classic movies like Alfie, Zulu, and The Italian Job (the inspiration for the book title) to playing Alfred opposite Christian Bale's Batman in Christopher Nolan's blockbuster Dark Knight trilogy. Caine has excelled in every kind of role - with a skill that's made it look easy. As he says, "Small parts can lead to big things. And if you keep doing things right, the stars will align when you least expect it."

Lucky Man, Lucky Audience
Revisado: 12-30-18
Caine delivers an affable, entertaining retrospective of his life that is equal parts acting advice/lecture and memoir. You don't have to be a performer to enjoy it, either (this listener is not). His thoughts on aging and the loss of friends near the end is particularly wise and compelling. Though not a fan of his, by the end I had the urge to see several of his films - and probably will.

Historia
A moving coming-of-age story set in the 1900s, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the lives of 11-year-old Francie Nolan, her younger brother Neely, and their parents, Irish immigrants who have settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Johnny Nolan is as loving and fanciful as they come, but he is also often drunk and out of work, unable to find his place in the land of opportunity.

Still resonates
Revisado: 07-10-18
Betty Smith's depiction of grinding poverty and a young girl's coming of age in pre-WWI Brooklyn is still compelling despite some overwrought interior monologues. The first six chapters should be required reading for anyone learning about early 20th century life in the U.S.
