Historia
After an unremarkable interview, Circus agent George Smiley determines the subject of a standard security check—a civil servant in the Foreign Office named Samuel Fennan—poses no threat, nor presents any reason for suspicion of espionage. Hours later, Samuel Fennan is found dead by suicide. Suddenly finding himself under intense scrutiny, Smiley realizes the Circus intends to blame him for Fennan's death. Rather than remain idle, Smiley begins his own investigation into the nature of the man's demise.

Historia
One minute, down-and-out actor Lorenzo Smythe is, as usual, in a bar, drinking away his troubles while watching his career circle the drain. Then a space pilot buys him a drink, and the next thing Smythe knows, he’s shanghaied to Mars. Smythe suddenly finds himself agreeing to the most difficult role of his career: impersonating an important politician who has been kidnapped. Peace with the Martians is at stake, and failure to pull off the act could result in interplanetary war.

1660 England. General Edward Whalley and his son-in law Colonel William Goffe board a ship bound for the New World. I had no idea of how good Tin M is as a narrator. He brings Clarendon alive as well as his other characters. Harris let’s himself write as I think he wanted on this one. It’s long and deep and thoughtful.

Historia
Following the disastrous Java Sea campaign, the Allies went on the offensive in the Pacific in a desperate attempt to halt the Japanese forces that were rampaging across the region. With the conquest of Australia a very real possibility, the stakes were high. Their target: the Japanese-held Soloman Islands, in particular the southern island of Guadalcanal. Hamstrung by arcane pre-war thinking and a bureaucratic mind-set, the US Navy had to adapt on the fly in order to compete with the mighty Imperial Japanese Navy, whose ingenuity had fostered the creation of its Pacific empire.

One of best histories I’ve “read”/“listened” to ever. The author while clearly pro allies is very empathetic to the Japanese. I never would of thought that a nearly day by day account could be so exciting and suspenseful even when you know how it ends!

So the first book started with a bit of an unusual premise. But this one, well. It’s a powerful story and I normally don’t use those words. It’s dark and not for a light read.
Great writing, great narration. Excellent all around.

Volume One of Stalin begins and ends in January 1928 as Stalin boards a train bound for Siberia, about to embark upon the greatest gamble of his political life. He is now the ruler of the largest country in the world, but a poor and backward one, far behind the great capitalist countries in industrial and military power, encircled on all sides. In Siberia, Stalin conceives of the largest program of social reengineering ever attempted.

Great narration and writing but it’s a slog
Revisado: 05-05-20
Hey, this book is great. More than a biography but also a in-depth history of the early Bolshevik regime. Personalities come out and you get a good sense of what was happening and a better insight into why.
The narration was very good but a minor quibble is I didn’t know from his tone what was a quote and what was the author at times.
Overall highly recommended

Historia
For over a quarter century, Iran has been one of America's chief nemeses. Ever since Ayatollah Khomeini overthrew the Shah in 1979, the relationship between the two nations has been antagonistic: revolutionary guards chanting against the Great Satan, Bush fulminating against the Axis of Evil, Iranian support for Hezbollah, and President Ahmadinejad blaming the U.S. for the world's ills.

A good book, good overview but not great
Revisado: 05-21-19
This is a good overview of the factions within Iran since the Revolution. It’s a good summary and really puts some thought into how these factions work with each other and the outside world. It’s not the most comfortable story.
Well written but at times too willing to accept the “press” version of history. Overall I recommend as an entry point into the topic.

Historia
In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of 19th-century surgery on the eve of profound transformation. She conjures up early operating theaters - no place for the squeamish - and surgeons, working before anesthesia, who were lauded for their speed and brute strength. They were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. A young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister would solve the deadly riddle and change the course of history.
