Historia
I knocked up my best friend's sister. Let's start with how she decided to inform me and Pacey the news...together. Imagine that nightmare. I was going into what I thought was a hockey marketing meeting, and then bam! I'm going to be a dad and my best friend/teammate is attempting to imprint my face with his fist. Threats were tossed around, friendships were revoked, and then I was marched up to her apartment, suitcases in hand, and forced to live with her so I could take care of her every need. Now I'm finding it harder and harder not to fall for my best friend's little sister.

Wonderful narration but did not like characters
Revisado: 11-08-24
I bough this audiobook because of the quote in the preview "her lips tasted like lime and danger." First of all, the narration is extraordinary. The problem is I could not get through it because I didn't like the 2 people. He spoke about her in the way a man talks about a stripper on stage, not the way a man talks about a girl he is infatuated with. She seems very shallow and not all that likeable either.

Historia
Nearly six hundred years ago, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late 30s took a very old manuscript off a library shelf, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. That book was the last surviving manuscript of an ancient Roman philosophical epic by Lucretius—a beautiful poem containing the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles.

Fascinating history that I can't believe I missed.
Revisado: 11-08-24
This person has a truly unique story with lots of twists and turns. The author does not shy away from some different (some would say twisted) morality of the times but he also does not dwell on it. In the end, he connects it to our modern society in ways I never saw coming. Makes you view the history of thought in totally different ways. That is the best reason to read history.

Historia
Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she's studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book might have been a revelatory treatise on plant life. Lab Girl is that, but it is also so much more. Because in it, Jahren also shares with us her inspiring life story, in prose that takes your breath away.

Too sentimental for me.
Revisado: 07-18-24
I just couldn't make it through this book. The most distracting thing for me, which is the narration, which is really, really slow and breathy. And sounds like sunday's school teacher talking to first graders. The way that the life of a tree is described delicate childhood and awkward adolescents ginally leading to tragedy. It just felt so completely forced. I wish it had been more based in science and not just using science as an analogy for your life. But obviously from reading the reviews i'm in the minority.

It was an enjoyable conclusion to the series
Revisado: 06-28-24
It was very enjoyable. Some of the characters were over the top silly. But I think that's what you expect. Definitely need to read the first 2 books to have the background on who they are. The narrator was good. She made unique voices without making them annoying or distracting.

Historia
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

A really interesting premise with an interesting main character became heavy handed and slow.
Revisado: 06-02-24
There's a lot to like about this book. First the author really did her research about history of british imperialism and oxford university. Also seems to have a great knowledge of language. However this book is much longer than it needs to be given the plot. Also, the theme of colonialism intertwined with racism are interesting. But it gets a little bit heavy handed because every single english person is evil. Also I found the magic element kind of distracting. It would have been more interesting to me if they just showed how languages used to manipulate people and forward the empire Instead of this convoluted story about silver bars with magic words.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Good Ideas but Poor Science
Revisado: 11-06-23
They were parts of this book that I enjoyed very much. But the thing is frustrating is. The author makes no distinction between facts, theories, hypotheses and its own wild guesses. For instance he says Neanderthals couldn't conceive of abstract ideas like gods. There is strong evidence of ritual burial that the neanderthals ritually buried their dead With tools and weapons. So it is entirely reasonable to believe that there was some concept of the afterlife. He pretends that it's agreed upon fact that they didn't.

Revisado: 05-22-23
I don't understand the positive reviews. This book was so badly written, I couldn't figure out if it was a satire. The upper management at the department of magical youth has a sign that says " extremely upper management". The boss's assistant walks around behind her with a pat and an ultra long pencil writing down "demerit for you". Just in case we didn't understand she is petty. The narration is the absolute Worst. It makes scooby doo looking nuanced! The character sounds like part of a stand I p comedy skit.

irritatingly anachronistic
Revisado: 03-02-23
I couldn't get through it the anachronism was just irritating. He's supposed to be the commander of a modern naval destroyer. But he talks like he's a character straight out of a Herman Melville novel. Not just in the anachronitic and poetic language he uses. But in the way he talks about women being on a ship or the need for crew discipline. He sounds like a New England gentleman in charge of a Bedford whaling ship. He doesn't even mention modern devices on the ship. The narrator talks in Victorian style, almost like it is a parody.

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes best-selling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast. They’re polar opposites. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

Enjoyable Light Read
Revisado: 02-13-23
Overall I like this book. I like the main character. She's very relatable and sometimes life does hit you financially emotionally and professionally all at the same time. Also I like the premise and I think it's fun that they both have writers block and each one tries to write in the other's style.
But there were some things I didn't care for. One is in every romance novel, there has to be something keeps them apart. I just didn't think the thing that kept them apart was all that strong. It seemed like every time he didn't call January would jump to some awful conclusion that you, the reader, knew was not valid. Also I would've liked it if you helped the other right in their style. They didn't seem to really have as much detail on the writing as I would have thought, and went over the stories quickly.
Love scenes were nice and engaging (NC-17 though).
Overall good but could have been better.
