Historia
When she’s incarcerated under the authority of a shadowy new defense act, Riley is sent to one of a growing number of American Renewal Centers (ARCs)—institutions modeled after psychiatric facilities—for mandatory reeducation. Forced therapy, involuntary medication, solitary confinement, restricted rations, and more are all in the ARC program’s bag of dirty tricks designed to break down dissidents. Give in, and you go free. Resist, and … Riley declares a one-woman war against the gaslighting and manipulation in a struggle to take down the ARC program and its white-coated collaborators.

Outstanding
Revisado: 02-17-24
The Glass Box is both scary for its feasibility and hopeful in its resilience. The characters, like most of J Michael Straczynski's writing, are fully fleshed out and real. I honestly can't say enough about the quality of this book Just read it already!

Fantastic
Revisado: 11-26-23
After waiting ages for a new Patrick Rothfuss story, The Narrow Road Between Desires doesn't disappoint. While technically an expanded work from his short story, The Lightning Tree, this feels fresh and new. Many questions are left unanswered about the main character, which is disappointing, but the story is worth reading. It pulled at me heart more than once, and left me feeling hopeful not just for the future of The King Killer Chronicles, but for humanity as a whole.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

I really wanted to like it, but mostly didn't.
Revisado: 07-27-23
The story for this book is great, but as a whole I found it unsatisfying. I really didn't like the main character, Sadie, and found her attitude and motivations to be frustrating and exhausting. I thought Sam was interesting, but his flaws quickly went from interesting to annoying. Marx however, was a very satisfying character and one I wish had his own story.
The plot was great, and had all the elements it should have, but ultimately I feel like it missed many opportunities to breath and grow, in favor of trying to cram too much in, and be relevant to a specific generation. This story opted for new ideas before giving the previous ones time to resolve.
By the end I just felt the story didn't end satisfactorily, and never really helped the characters grow. Instead they just became a more mature and settled version of their younger selves.
I'll probably never read it again, but I don't think it isn't worth reading. I guess I just felt disappointed by the potential that was never realized. Give it a shot, you might love it, but I didn't.

The spiders make it worth reading
Revisado: 03-04-23
The spider portions of this book are amazing, but the human parts really don't have the same power. The humans often come across as people who have no right or maturity to be in the positions of authority they hold. But the spiders? That part of the book shines! It is thoughtful and brilliant and worth reading the whole book for.

Historia
David Starr Jordan was a taxonomist, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. When his specimen collections were demolished by lightning, by fire, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, many might have given up, given in to despair. But Jordan? He surveyed the wreckage at his feet, found the first fish that he recognized, and confidently began to rebuild his collection. And this time, he introduced one clever innovation.

Self Indulgent Therapy Guised as Science History
Revisado: 01-04-23
I really wanted to enjoy this book, and at times found it very informative, but as a whole it felt like a bait and switch. The premise is about David Starr Jordan, and his contributions to science, but it very quickly becomes obvious that this story is about the author's struggles and how her kinship to Jordan (early on) helped her find healing.
Frankly, I didn't know much about Jordan before this book. What I heard here about him fascinated and disgusted me. I can't help wonder though, how much bias was inserted in her narrative due to her own feelings as she researched him. I mean at face value he was horrible, but was he worse due to her narrative? Hard to say.
My real struggle with this book was that it is presented as a study on David Starr Jordan, but half the book or more is her own life and struggles. She often projects her own life views on him, and it comes across as narrow and biased. It is a clear example of someone taking a story, and making it all about them.
If you are looking for something with drama, and self discovery this is your book. But if you want to learn unbiased history, and judge for yourself, I'd pass this one by.

Perfect book for any writer who feels alone with their thoughts and drive. Perfect for anyone trying to understand the writers in their lives. While this isn't a writing manual, it does cover many unsaid realities of what being a writer takes. Read it for insight, not for instruction.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

A Fantastic Journey
Revisado: 01-13-22
I loved the world and flow of Piranesi. The house is intriguing and full of wonder. I could feel the vastness of the halls with each chapter and was lost in the labyrinth...and that's a good thing. The narrative voice is outstanding, the characters engaging, and the pace perfect. My only complaint has to do with the climax...I felt like it didn't stand high with the rest of the story. That said, everyone should read this one!

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Not Weir's best, but worth reading.
Revisado: 08-26-21
This was a good read, but not a great read. Jaz is a great asshole.of a character, enjoyable and deep. But the stakes just took way to long to develop in this story. The Martian and Hail Mary are clear from chapter one in terms of high stakes, but this one just took too long to get there. Biggest complaint for me? the profanity really took from the impact of the moments, it was so prevalent that the important moments deserve of the F word felt flat.

Rough Read but Worth it.
Revisado: 08-12-21
Despite knowing the subject matter up front, this book was much more raw than I expected. It was painful and beautiful. Not a book for the faint of heart. The profanity and deep darkness the characters often live through can be hard to experience. But I'm glad I have it a chance.

Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place. Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries. The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes.
