I wish I could give 6 stars for the performance!
Revisado: 10-22-23
I read this in high school because I had to but I LOVED listening to it again many decades later. Ruby Dee was absolutely phenomenal. Highly recommend this unabridged version.

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Loved listening to my favorite book
Revisado: 01-10-23
I loved getting to listen to my favorite book, which I have read in print 6 times. Hearing it read aloud allowed me to appreciate each word in a new way, and I loved it! The performer was often a bit over the top when taking on the voices of different characters. I would've preferred a slightly subtler and mellower performance but she did an excellent job of giving voice to Dorothea and Rosamund. The voices for some of the lesser male characters were so dramatic that it was somewhat irritating but otherwise I enjoyed it very much.

I wish it was more obvious it was abridged
Revisado: 05-06-22
I didn't know this was abridged and am sorely disappointed as I started it on Audible and was going to continue reading it in book form but now I have to start the book completely over. It's a shame that it's abridged. Such incredibly rich, beautiful writing should never be abridged.

Historia
Shakespeare Anyone? is co-hosted by Elyse Sharp and Kourtney Smith, two professional actors and hobbyist Shakespeare scholars. Join us as we explore Shakepeare’s plays through as many lenses as we can by looking at the text and how the text is viewed through modern lenses of feminism, racism, classism, colonialism, nationalism… all the-isms. We will discuss how his plays shaped both the past and present, and look at how his work was performed throughout various periods of time–all while trying our best to approach his works without giving in to bardolatry. We examine one play at a time ...

Overly simplified
Revisado: 02-05-22
I am not a scholar but I know enough about Tudor England and Shakespeare to know that this podcast is overly simplified to the point of being inaccurate. I believe the hosts are trying to be entertaining and perhaps "hip" but I would prefer something educational, academic, and balanced.

Entertaining but some inaccuracies
Revisado: 11-09-21
This was very entertaining but there were a few inaccuracies in the biography. One was when the narrator said that Casaubon did not include Dorothea in his scientific experiments-- he was not a scientist but was a theologian. Another example was when the narrator said that Gwendolen Harleth was a German woman. Otherwise, it was an easy, entertaining intro to Eliot's life.
