A Great Decline
Revisado: 02-04-25
All I was an avid fan of the original trilogy in this series, this book was a large letdown, and I don't believe I will be continuing.
The first complaint is minor. There was a new narrator for the series. While annoying, that is something that could be adjusted to. However, she does not distinguish very well between male voices, and there were several conversations between just men that I can not tell who was saying what.
Secondly, the author has clearly decided to attempt a different writing style, and we are now jumping around from the perspectives of multiple different characters as our narrators. Again, it is something that we can adjust to over time.
Lastly, and my greatest issue with this book is that the author did release several short stories between the books in the series. Rather than these short stories being an optional addition to this world that she's created, she has made it necessary for her readers to purchase and read the short stories or be completely lost in this book. She references multiple events that have large effects on characters that we knew previously, there are new characters who were introduced in apparently very dramatic fashion, and new villains that are extremely pertinent to know about prior to this book.
Unfortunately, while I adored the original trilogy to the series, but this combination I don't believe it will be continuing it.

Letters, Questions, Open- ended
Revisado: 12-25-24
This book was simply not for me. The entire book is written as correspondence between different characters. The book leaves a lot of questions and no true ending. Personal preference, but I do not like open- endings.

Historia
If the broken neon signs, shuttered storefronts, and sub-standard housing didn’t tip you off, you’ve just wandered into the city of “Undisclosed”. You don’t want to be caught dead here, because odds are you just might find yourself rising from the grave. That hasn’t stopped tourists from visiting to check out the unusual phenomena that hangs around our town like radioactive fallout. Interdimensional parasites feeding on human hosts, paranormal cults worshipping demonic entities, vengeful teenage sorcerers, we’ve got it all.

Entertaining and Confusing

As with every book in this series, you start out confused, occasionally get confused throughout, but have it all wrapped up by the end. Highly entertaining!

Interesting, realistic, I like that it tied in real world events. However, the ending was a little lackluster and vague for me.

Historia
American Book Award-winning author Tananarive Due's second collection of stories ranges from horror to science fiction to suspense. From the mysterious, magical town of Gracetown to the aftermath of a pandemic to the reaches of the far future, Due's stories all share a sense of dread and fear balanced with heart and hope. In some of these stories, the monster is racism itself; others address the monster within, or other universal struggles set against the supernatural or surreal. All of them are written with Due's trademark attention to detail and deep characterization.

Open Endings
Revisado: 12-19-24
A lot of interesting and creative short stories, but they are mostly open ended leaving you wondering. Just a personal preference if mine, but I prefer closure and don't like open ended endings.

Good story, relatively good Heroine
Revisado: 11-21-24
The storyline was decent. Only somewhat predictable towards the end, but definitely not fully. It's a "who dunnit" spanning decades with twists and turns.
However, the heroine makes out to be a smooth character who has gone through tough spots and hardships, but repeatedly loses her head when stressed. I found her personality to be somewhat contradictory at times, but overall good.

Annoying heroine, decent story
Revisado: 11-21-24
**very minor spoiler**
Interesting premise, good challenges, but there are two big instances where Ophelia is plain annoying and dumb. These are life or death situations and she gets too "distracted" or "forgets" to call upon the help she bargained for. There are other minor annoyances, but those two rankled. I did enjoy how it all came together at the end.

Haelewise has always lived under the shadow of her mother, Hedda—a woman who will do anything to keep her daughter protected. For with her strange black eyes and even stranger fainting spells, Haelewise is shunned by her village, and her only solace lies in the stories her mother tells of child-stealing witches, of princes in wolf-skins, of an ancient tower cloaked in mist, where women will find shelter if they are brave enough to seek it. Then, Hedda dies, and Haelewise is left unmoored.
