Best of the trilogy
Revisado: 02-23-24
With dystopian novels the current rage, the oft-neglected “That Hideous Strength” is that one book people should be reading more than once. The ultimate question one (and the main character) grapples with is “What can science achieve with the removal of ethics and what does that do to the soul?” Oligarchies, social engineering, and the objective standard of ethics are found throughout the book at a deep level.
Don’t be alarmed if not all is caught at the first reading of the book. This book is meant to be read a couple more times and can act as a stand alone novel.
One of my favorite quotes:
“Mark was well aware of the rising danger. Obviously, if he disobeyed, his last chance getting out Belbury alive might be gone. The smothering sensation once again attacked him. He was himself, he felt, as helpless as the wooden Christ. As he thought this, he found himself looking at the crucifix in a new way—neither as a piece of wood nor a monument of superstition but as a bit of history. Christianity was nonsense, but one did not doubt that the man had lived and had been executed thus by the Belbury of those days. And that, as he suddenly saw, explained why this image, though not itself an image of the Straight and Normal, was yet in opposition to crooked Belbury. It was a picture of what happened when the Straight met the Crooked, a picture of what the Crooked did to the Straight—what it would do to him if he remained straight. It was, in a more emphatic sense than he had yet understood, a cross.”

Historia
Beginning with the story of Stephen from the book of Acts, considered the first Christian martyr, the drama builds to the passion of the early Church's persecution under the Roman Empire. The hardy and radical faith of those first believers spawned medieval missionary movements that spread the gospel across Europe and into England, Scotland, and Ireland. As the story continues, it places a significant emphasis on the sufferings of the early Protestants during the Reformation.

A powerful account
Revisado: 02-17-24
“…and when they called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.”
- Acts 5:40-41 (ESV)
“…the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.”
- Tertullian (Apologeticus)
Reading the accounts of saints whom experienced martyrdom at the hands of superstitious zealots was tough yet joyous to read. These were men, women, brothers, sisters, children, and infants that never wavered to the pressure of alternate kingdoms (Rome, the Inquisitors) but stood with the same demeanor as Polycarp upon receiving his crown of martyrdom, “86 years have I served him, and he has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King and my Savior?”
In reading the unabridged version, there were sketch’s of Protestant figures and minor stories of persecution that seemed to disrupt the flow of the book.

New York Times best seller and Whitebread Book of the Year, Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney's new translation of Beowulf comes to life in this gripping audio. Heaney's performance reminds us that Beowulf, written near the turn of another millennium, was intended to be heard not read.

Vastly under appreciated
Revisado: 02-01-24
Imagine a pitch dark night in the woods with a bright camp fire towards the middle and an old battle scarred storyteller recounting the tales of a warrior fit for a story on a night like this. Beowulf is worthy of such an honor.
Beowulf is a tale of honor, chivalry, and courage when Danes weren’t known for such characteristics in a society which only knows them as savage, anti-Christian plunderers.
Beowulf is an archetype worth emulating and a story worth telling to young boys.

Historia
The English-speaking peoples comprise perhaps the greatest number of human beings sharing a common language in the world today. These people also share a common heritage. For his four-volume work, Sir Winston Churchill took as his subject these great elements in world history. Volume 1 commences in 55BC, when Julius Caesar famously "turned his gaze upon Britain" and concludes with the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

Excellent Storytelling
Revisado: 01-31-24
Written like Sir Walter Scott’s Tales of a Scottish Grandfather - A History of Scotland, Churchill writes his prose not as an academic but as a vigorous student and lover of English history.
He does a fantastic job capturing the narrative component of history through the means of great story telling.
Vol. I goes through Britain’s early tribal beginnings under Roman rule up til the death of King Richard with great characters such as William the Conqueror and Joan of Arc introduced and great story arcs such as the battle between the House of York and Lancaster which ignite the War of the Roses.

Perelandra is a planet of pleasure, an unearthly, misty world of strange desires, sweet smells, and delicious tastes, where beasts are friendly and naked beauty is unashamed, a new Garden of Eden, where the story of the oldest temptation is enacted in an intriguingly new way.

Weakest out of the trilogy
Revisado: 01-22-24
The temptation to abandon the series altogether was at a fever pitch through the first 6 chapters but I did not relent due to the reputation of “That Hideous Strength.”
This is book is the weakest of the trilogy, again, based off reputation of the 3rd book. Its only other redeeming quality was the re-telling of the Fall with Ransom, the un-man, and the green lady (not spoiling who she is), which I quite enjoyed.

Assuming this is the weakest of the trilogy
Revisado: 01-17-24
When it comes to building out worlds, the difference between colleagues, C.S Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien is miles apart. The different creatures that show up in passing throughout the story was a bit overwhelming and in the end you don’t feel emotionally tied to any character.
Although, the books saving grace is the reveal in the end which gives the book its need complexity to continue the series. In the end, as Ransom put it “this is a prologue” and that’s how I’ll view it.

In his own day the dominant personality of the Western Church, Augustine of Hippo today stands as perhaps the greatest thinker of Christian antiquity, and his Confessions is one of the great works of Western literature. Now modern listeners will have easier access to St. Augustine's deeply personal meditations. Chadwick's lucid translation and helpful introduction clear the way for a new experience of this classic.

A review on Confession by St. Augustine
Revisado: 01-11-24
Considered by many the first written biography, St. Augustine does a wonderful job weaving biography, his inner turmoil with sin, and rich theological truths.
Confessions give a better understanding to those that practiced as Augustinian monks such as Martin Luther, their honesty and self doubt when faced with the reality that one is not “good” apart from God.
The chapters on his conversion and death of Monica were moving.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

A classic for a reason
Revisado: 01-04-24
I’ve always heard this book to be one of the greats and now I understand why. The reader’s voyage throughout the book in experiencing Elizabeth’s internal struggle with presumption and prejudices is nerve wrecking but exciting leaving the reader wanting to know what comes next.
Austen performs a masterclass in crafting her characters —from Elizabeth to Mr. Darcy to Jane within the story is delightful and genius.
