Historia
After more than 20 years away, Alda Sigmundsdottir returned to her native Iceland as a foreigner. With a native person's insight yet an outsider's perspective, Alda quickly set about dissecting the national psyche of the Icelanders. This second edition, from 2018, contains new and updated chapters from the original edition, reflecting the changes in Icelandic society and among the Icelandic people since the book was first published in 2012.

OK
Revisado: 09-15-24
The stories are not very entertaining. I was excited about visiting Iceland, the home of Saga literature and history and exciting landscapes and wonderful horses, but now I'll have to rethink this if Icelanders are really such a bunch of self-absorbed, dour alcoholics.

The Wolf Age takes listeners on a thrilling journey through the bloody shared history of England and Scandinavia, and on across early medieval Europe, from the wild Norwegian fjords to the wealthy cities of Muslim Andalusia. Warfare, plotting, backstabbing, and bribery abound as Tore Skeie skillfully weaves sagas and skaldic poetry with breathless dramatization as he entertainingly brings the world of the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons to vivid life.

Brilliant!
Revisado: 05-31-24
This is a masterful weaving into one synchronous, fascinating story of the many and varied developments during the Viking era among regions adjacent to the North Sea, and successfully makes sense of it all from a Scandinavian perspective.

Historia
When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

Awful
Revisado: 05-31-24
Norm was a great comedian; a lot of his success derived from his presence and his delivery. He could read from the phonebook and make it be hilarious. Nothing of this was communicated through the narrator who displayed only the unusual (for narrators) talent of making everything he read seem unfunny. Moreover, the stories were lame. (Except the tale about the Make-A-Wish kid.) I fell asleep about halfway through and never finished listening, so I can't say whether this ever developed into something redemptive, humorous or interesting.

Historia
On a hot June morning in 1975, a fatal shoot-out took place between FBI agents and American Indians on a remote property near Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in which an Indian and two federal agents were killed. Eventually, four members of the American Indian Movement were indicted on murder charges in the deaths of the two agents. Behind this violent chain of events lie issues of great complexity and profound historical resonance, brilliantly explicated by Peter Matthiessen in this controversial book.

Fascinating Book
Revisado: 05-27-24
This a well researched and well written account of events surrounding the death of two FBI agents and the conviction of
Leonard Peltier. There was too much to absorb in the first reading and I need to reread it to not forget important details, The narrator did proper justice to the story, including the effective use of rez accent in several parts.
If it were within my power, I would assign this book as part of any US history or civics program from the level of high school and above.

Being respondible
Revisado: 03-16-24
Spunky, likable main character. Sophomoric writing and predictable plot. Warfare, however, is not some little thing, so when we wage it and risk lives, we retain the responsibility to hear out the testimony and try to learn from it.

It's typically a terrible performance when authors read their own books; this is the exception. The performance was spot on and this coming-of-age story was interesting, believable and uplifting without being sappy.

Historia
From the perspective of those who live in Herot Hall, the suburb is a paradise. Picket fences divide buildings—high and gabled—and the community is entirely self-sustaining. Each house has its own fireplace, each fireplace is fitted with a container of lighter fluid, and outside—in lawns and on playgrounds—wildflowers seed themselves in neat rows. But for those who live surreptitiously along Herot Hall’s periphery, the subdivision is a fortress guarded by an intense network of gates, surveillance cameras, and motion-activated lights.

What were they thinking?
Revisado: 07-10-23
Typically audiobooks employ appropriate voice actors, but in this case it was an incongruous choice to employ a narrator with a heavy south Asian accent for a story written about English ex-pats.
