Historia
Naomi wasn’t just running away from her wedding. She was riding to the rescue of her twin. Too bad for Naomi, her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with a niece she didn’t know she had. Now, she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no home - and an 11-year-old to take care of. Since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least Knox can do is help her out. And just as soon as she's out of trouble, he can get back to his peaceful, solitary life. That’s the plan, until the trouble turns to real danger.

Not for me
Revisado: 12-31-23
I get the appeal of this story…it’s like a soft core porn hallmark movie with a very formulaic rom-com feel. It just wasn’t my cup of tea. I did finish it, as it was a book club book. I just thought it lacked imagination and intelligence, and many of the characters were super cringey and unflatteringly stereotypical. It just wasn’t a good take, IMO.
The narrators were fantastic, though.

Historia
Mrs. Post, the President and First Lady are here to see you. . . . So begins another average evening for Marjorie Merriweather Post. Presidents have come and gone, but she has hosted them all. Growing up in the modest farmlands of Battle Creek, Michigan, Marjorie was inspired by a few simple rules: always think for yourself, never take success for granted, and work hard—even when deemed American royalty, even while covered in imperial diamonds.

Very one dimensional
Revisado: 06-05-23
This was a book club book, so I soldiered through, but not what I would call great or even good. The character’s depiction was one dimensional, self congratulatory and self righteous. Important things like a family members suicide or accidental death seemed like footnotes, while descriptions of her slim figure, dazzling jewels and impeccable hostess skills went on and on. It seemed to read like an old fashioned, prudish romance novel. The narrator was smooth but had a strange tone that made me dislike the main character even more that the author’s shallow depiction of her. However, it absolutely fit the story, so maybe it was purposeful on her part.
I did learn about the life of a colorful and interesting person, so that earned an extra star from what was almost a 2 star review. I’d love to find a more in depth, less self-impressed version of Marjorie Post to read.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Stunningly Beautiful Story
Revisado: 05-27-23
This is a beautiful story of such depth and wonder. The connectedness of the characters who live across such distance of space and time is a marvel. A thoughtful and rich masterpiece that will stay with you long after you’ve finished reading.

Historia
On the brink of a life-changing decision, Alexis Fielding plans a trip to her mother's childhood home in Plaka, Greece hoping to unravel Sofia's hidden past. Given a letter to take to Sofia's old friend, Fotini, Alexis is promised that through Fotini, she will learn more. Arriving in Plaka, Alexis is astonished to see that it lies a stone's throw from the deserted island of Spinalonga—Greece's former leper colony. Fotini reveals the story that Sofia has buried all her life: the tale of her great-grandmother Eleni and her daughters, and a family rent by tragedy, war, and passion.

A beautiful and beautifully told story
Revisado: 09-14-22
I am so happy to have stuck with this book. Initially a little slow and slightly confusing to keep the characters straight, this story became more layered as it went. The characters were richly developed, and the author was wonderful about not “telling” the story, but rather allowing it to unfold. If you loved books like Molokai and Pachinko, you will also love The Island.
