Historia
In this fascinating tour of a celebrated city during one of its most trying, significant, and ultimately triumphant eras, Agnes Poirier unspools the stories of the poets, writers, painters, and philosophers whose lives collided to extraordinary effect between 1940 and 1950. She gives us the human drama behind some of the most celebrated works of the 20th century, along with the origin stories of now legendary movements, from Existentialism to the Theatre of the Absurd, New Journalism, bebop, and French feminism.

Terrible narration effort. Fact heavy
Revisado: 01-01-23
The narrator didn’t try. Just runs on, monotone without any sense of breaks for a book that changes subject constantly. They could have automated the audio and has the effect. Just lazy production, and it completely compromises the audio experience.
The book itself has issues. Factually dense. But so we really get sense of these artists and what they’re doing? The facts do add up to something.

Historia
Lunchtime on a Saturday, 1944: The Woolworths on Bexford High Street in South London receives a delivery of aluminum saucepans. A crowd gathers to see the first new metal in ages - after all, everything’s been melted down for the war effort. An instant later, the crowd is gone; incinerated. Among the shoppers were five young children.

slow, but thoughtful and well read
Revisado: 10-26-21
Imogen Church is terrific and manages an interesting but dry-ish text very well. Recommended for anyone interested. (I chose this as I'm working through the Booker longllist, mostly on audio.)

Historia
Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

Historia
A major audiobook about the future of the world, blending intellectual and natural history and field reporting into a powerful account of the mass extinction unfolding before our eyes. Over the last half a billion years, there have been five mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on Earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs.

over-dramatic reader hidden by Audible sample
Revisado: 06-05-16
Any additional comments?
The reader, Anne Twomey, insanely over-dramatizes this book, weakening it the severely. It sounds like a bad psuedo-science show on a coming UFO invasion.
Audible hides this in their sample.
The Audible sample has a very passionate and professional sounding reader. Only after I purchased did I realize that the sample was Kolbert herself, reading the prologue, and not Twomey, who reads the rest of the book. I wish Kolbert had read the whole book.
