Historia
Drawing on the latest discoveries that have only recently come to light, Scottish archaeologist Neil Oliver goes on the trail of the real Vikings. Where did they emerge from? How did they really live? And just what drove them to embark on such extraordinary voyages of discovery over 1,000 years ago? The Vikings: A New History explores many of those questions for the first time in an epic story of one of the world's great empires of conquest.

Excellent structure

This book was read well and had an excellent structure. It’s one of those books you find yourself not wanting to stop listening to, it’s that good! Insightful mix of a broad perspective on the Vikings as well as the author’s experience with the topic. Do yourself a favor and take a listen!

Historia
Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Grand cities and luxurious villas were deserted and left to crumble, and civil society collapsed into chaos. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters. The Anglo-Saxons traces the turbulent history of these people across the next six centuries. It explains how their earliest rulers fought relentlessly against each other for glory and supremacy, and then were almost destroyed by the onslaught of the vikings.

Okay

I think I would’ve liked this book more if I could have gotten behind the narrator. He is a more soft spoken narrator and unless I had ear pods in, it was not always easy to understand him. The content itself was good, narration, meh.

Historia
The Viking Age - from 750 to 1050 saw an unprecedented expansion of the Scandinavian peoples into the wider world. As traders and raiders, explorers and colonists, they ranged from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. But for centuries, the Vikings have been seen through the eyes of others, distorted to suit the tastes of medieval clerics and Elizabethan playwrights, Victorian imperialists, Nazis, and more. None of these appropriations capture the real Vikings, or the richness and sophistication of their culture.

Historia
Drawing on the diaries of one woman in 18th-century Maine, this intimate history illuminates the medical practices, household economies, religious rivalries, and sexual mores of the New England frontier. Between 1785 and 1812, a midwife and healer named Martha Ballard kept a diary that recorded her arduous work (in 27 years she attended 816 births) as well as her domestic life in Hallowell, Maine.

Informative history
Revisado: 01-29-25
I can’t believe this woman’s diary almost never came to be published! This was such a great history of early America and New England. I was surprised that a lot of the conservative ideas we have about this time were false. Children born out of wedlock were common and this did not mean ostracization of women or those children.

Historia
The Tudor period conjures up images of queens and noblewomen in elaborate court dress, of palace intrigue and dramatic politics. But if you were a woman, it was also a time when death during childbirth was rife, when marriage was usually a legal contract, not a matter for love, and the education you could hope to receive was minimal at best. Yet the Tudor century was also dominated by powerful and dynamic women in a way that no era had been before.

Taken together, the civilizations of Sumer, Assyria, and Persia have helped form the modern makeup of Mesopotamia, western Asia, and the world. However, to really understand why things are the way they are, it’s important to break up this historical timeline and spend some time learning about each society. Only by doing this will you be able to fully appreciate the powerful impact these ancient peoples had on our modern world.

Disappointing narration
Revisado: 01-18-25
While the content of this book was good, I am sad I wasted a credit on it. The narration was so very poor. It sounded like an AI reading and word pronouncement was too grating for me to finish.

Historia
The first Plantagenet king inherited a blood-soaked kingdom from the Normans and transformed it into an empire stretched at its peak from Scotland to Jerusalem. In this epic history, Dan Jones vividly resurrects this fierce and seductive royal dynasty and its mythic world. We meet the captivating Eleanor of Aquitaine, twice queen and the most famous woman in Christendom; her son, Richard the Lionheart, who fought Saladin in the Third Crusade; and King John, a tyrant who was forced to sign Magna Carta, which formed the basis of our own Bill of Rights.

Written by a man
Revisado: 08-09-24
This book was clearly written by a man. From the minimization of Empress Matilda and the description of her as “haughty” to the overlooking of Alice being raped and having 2 children by Henry the 2nd, it’s clear the author is male. I recommend Daughters of Chivalry and Queens of the Crusades for a less biased, more well rounded description of the women and men in this period of history. This book was plainly disappointing on its glazing over of rape, imprisonment, and misogyny of women.

Historia
Henrietta Maria is British history's most reviled queen consort. Condemned in her lifetime as a traitor and adulteress, she remains in popular memory the wife who wore the breeches in her marriage, the woman who turned her husband Catholic (and so caused the English Civil War), and a cruel mother. This clear-eyed biography unpicks the myths and considers the story from her point of view. A portrait emerges of a woman whose closest friends included Puritans as well as Catholics, who crossed swords with Cardinal Richelieu, and led the anti-Spanish faction at the English court.

I did not know the history of Henrietta Maria prior to this book. I’m so glad I picked it randomly and gave it a listen. It’s a really detailed discussion of her life and one I enjoyed learning about.

Historia
Each Tudor monarch made their name with a Dudley by their side—or by crushing one beneath their feet. The Dudleys thrived at the court of Henry VII but were sacrificed to the popularity of Henry VIII. Rising to prominence in the reign of Edward VI, the Dudleys lost it all by advancing Jane Grey to the throne over Mary I. That was until the reign of Elizabeth I, when the family was once again at the center of power and would do anything to remain there . . . With three generations of felled favorites, what was it that caused this family to keep rising so high and falling so low?

Revisado: 07-15-24
This book caught my attention and kept it for all 17 hours! I found myself wanting to go back and listen more and thinking about what would happen next-although I well know the history of the Tudors. The authors telling of the history of the Dudley’s is simply excellent. She draws you in and leaves you wanting more. I searched to see if she had more published items (I did not find anything else in audible), because she writes that well. I

Why did the flushing toilet take two centuries to catch on? Why did medieval people sleep sitting up? When were the two "dirty centuries?" Why did gas lighting cause Victorian ladies to faint? Why, for centuries, did rich people fear fruit? In her brilliantly and creatively researched book, Lucy Worsley takes us through the bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen.

Interesting, but…
Revisado: 07-12-24
I wanted to enjoy this book, however, the author made the choice to mention Monica Lewinsky in a derogatory way. This is so crass and shows the authors lack of empathy. Lewinsky was a youth groomed and targeted by a much older man. She should not be made fun of. Make fun of the man who abused her! This had no place in this book. I couldn’t enjoy the book after.
