Historia
Millions of fans of Little House on the Prairie believe they know Laura Ingalls - the pioneer girl who survived blizzards and near-starvation on the Great Plains, and the woman who wrote the famous autobiographical books. But the true story of her life has never been fully told. Now, drawing on unpublished manuscripts, letters, diaries, and land and financial records, Caroline Fraser masterfully fills in the gaps in Wilder's biography.

She should be nominated for Sainthood
Revisado: 12-25-24
I finally just stopped listening.
L.E. Wilder couldn’t catch a break in life if it was handed to her. Good grief.
But, she persevered and saw and wrote about the silver linings seen in lifes clouds. Despite dust storms, insect swarms, freezing weather, Great Depression, disease & constant illness - we got stories of humble cheerful plains pioneers. Her life was Hell on earth.

Historia
Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

A saga of conquering the frontier
Revisado: 11-12-24
Great story of family history in Texas. Tremendous tales of survival, There is ample torture and Indian society living and sex woven in. Graphic actually. Then… then the story just runs out of gas. The final chapters whip up lose ends (about 50 after you decipher the lineage) and then, over and out. Its a deep colorful dive into these characters challenging and sad lives for 4/5th’s of the book. The performance is well done and contains multiple narrators.

Well, that was that….
Revisado: 08-23-24
Not exactly refreshing. Such a hollow shift from the optimism, despite the obstacles, one felt with Lonesome Dove. Mr. M. derailed on the violent deaths to his characters (both good and bad ones). The majority of them get shot, stabbed, burned, snake bit, trounced, give up on life, mutilated or drown almost to death. Even dogs and sheep die a slow miserable death. Times were difficult in the 19th century, but enough already.... I just sort of wanted it to end.
And the character named Maria....was she to be regarded (throughout the ENTIRE story) as some Saint ? I feel sure that even Mother Teresa had boundaries.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Enough Already.....
Revisado: 03-14-23
I just flat gave up, If you like reading what would be the equivalent of hearing a broken record skipping and starting over and over and over and... this is for you. Imagine reading the first 3-4 chapters of a book as the preface for every single chapter in the damn book. After about 7 runs of the same beginning occurring in each new chapter, and then a new twist arriving at the end, it became pointless. I just stopped caring which way the road would fork this time, BECAUSE, it was going to start over THE SAME in the next chapter and then wind around to some new ending.

Historia
Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor", a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

Not the greatest
Revisado: 01-26-23
This lady had many more issues than alcohol consumption. The story spent too much time on her journey down. I wanted to learn more about her recovery, hope and success. That part was packaged into one chapter. The narrator was something else. Non-stop sullen, melancholy and morose. She could make winning the lottery seem like a gloomy undertaking.

Characters had no character
Revisado: 06-13-22
Characters were out of sync & their decisions were just plain incongruent & spineless. Powerful & brilliant people letting life’s shifts paralyze them…. hardly. But - thats a novel.
This book must have been a publishers requirement. Ms. McCullough had a quota.
Ms. Sterlin’s performance was very good.
