“The victor writes history with the blood of the vanquished.”
I love this series so much! I was worried that when he added new POV characters in Iron Gold I’d enjoy the books less because there’d be less of the characters I loved, but that hasn’t been the case at all! I’m so glad Lightbringer won’t be the end!

I love this series
Revisado: 03-08-23
This is one of my favorite series. I was hooked from the first page and the pacing is perfect. The writing is thought provoking and beautiful without being overwritten. The characters are flawed but lovable. The world is complex and interesting.
Tim Gerard Reynolds does a fantastic job on the narration. I recommend both the book and the audiobook frequently.

I’ve really enjoyed this series, and I enjoyed getting more of Zu’s and enjoyed the new characters. I was annoyed any time the narrator said Suzume or Vida’s names, as they were pronounced differently than they were in previous books.

Historia
Yesterday I was a teenager waiting tables in Manhattan, and today, monsters exist and I can see them. Overnight I’m thrown into the realm of the Watchers, a society of earthbound angels split into two factions: the Shades, whose powerful dark magic is given to them by the fallen angels, and the Lumens, whose abilities are bestowed on them by the archangels of Avalon. They’re on opposite sides of a brutal war, and I only have a few days to pick which side I want to join. I’m ready to choose when the Shades force my hand by cursing someone I love.

This was a fast, fun read. Aspects of the world and some plot points were really similar to the Mortal Instruments series, but it was different enough to keep me interested. If you’re looking for clean Urban Fantasy for young teens, I’d definitely recommend this.

Historia
I’m not an orphan; I just feel like one. When my father dropped me off at Larkspur Academy with nothing more than my backpack, I didn’t know what to expect. Definitely not: A mean girl who looks exactly like me. A forbidden library full of mysterious books. Or...A paranormal mystery I didn’t ask for and can’t possibly solve on my own. Why me? Why now? Will the answers help me reign in an escaped power that threatens my classmates, my family, and possibly, the world?

Interesting premise
Revisado: 03-12-22
This story was fast paced and interesting, and I feel like the world has a lot of potential. I wish the characters had been more fleshed out, and the plot less rushed. The book ends rather abruptly, and while I understand having cliff hangers to keep readers wanting more, it felt like nothing was explained or resolved in this book.

Historia
Queenie Jenkins is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle-class peers. After a messy breakup from her White long-term boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places...including several hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth.

Raw, gritty, sometimes frustrating
Revisado: 11-10-21
Queenie is stuck. After being dumped by her long-term boyfriend, Queenie tries to fill the void with a series of irresponsible sexual encounters. As the book progresses we get an up close look at Queenie’s struggle with mental health, struggle to balance the expectations of office (where she’s the only black woman) and her Jamaican grandparents. Trying to balance a desire to get healthy with the cultural taboo against therapy and discussions of mental health.
Queenie is smart, witty, passionate, and interesting. She’s also frustrating beyond belief as we’re forced to watch her make bad decision after bad decision. She’s one of the most complex, real, characters I’ve read in a long time.
I also really appreciated the balance between the raw portrait of a woman who is struggling, and the humor of her wit and her friends (the Corgis) helping her find the light.

Historia
Camellia Beauregard is a Belle. In the opulent world of Orleans, Belles are revered, for they control beauty, and beauty is a commodity coveted above all else. In Orleans, the people are born gray, they are born damned, and only with the help of a Belle and her talents can they transform and be made beautiful. But it's not enough for Camellia to be just a Belle. She wants to be the favorite - the Belle chosen by the queen of Orleans to live in the royal palace, to tend to the royal family and their court, to be recognized as the most talented Belle in the land.

Well-written fantasy book with powerful themes
Revisado: 11-10-21
I really enjoyed this book! In the world of the Belles, beauty and power go hand in hand, with the Belles using their abilities to sculpt the wealthy and powerful into whatever they choose. There’s darkness behind the beauty and glamor though, and more than a few secrets and mysteries. The book looks at the commodification of beauty (and who benefits from said commodification) through the lens of the fictional world of Orleans.
I loved Clayton’s world and writing style, and the focus on strong female characters! The world was really rich and interesting and vibrant. Camellia is strong and cunning, but also compassionate. Edel is fiercely, passionately herself, regardless of anyone else’s expectations. Bree is kind and loyal, strong and capable. I loved the characters and was excited to spend more time with them in book two.
