Historia
Why do people who have so much—leading comfortable lives filled with unprecedented freedom, choice, and abundance—often feel so unhappy and unfulfilled? This phenomenon is a defining paradox of our time and one we endlessly seek to solve. In The Social Paradox, psychologist William von Hippel argues that we need to think about this problem in a new way. By changing our perspective, we might finally see the solution, bringing us greater happiness and more satisfying relationships. The key is to understand the interplay between our two most basic psychological needs—for connection and autonomy.

Excellent perspective

This perspective on our evolutionary psychology was fascinating. It’s interesting to understand on a suicidal and personal level. It explains some of the emptiness and anxiety humans are experiencing.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Kudos to author and voice actor
Revisado: 05-25-24
Very worth your read. This will challenge your brain in a good way.
I started this and just wasn’t sure I wanted to ‘go down this road’. But the reader’s voice kept me engaged. Once engaged and willing to tackle the subjects, I was IN.
On premise is that our beliefs have consequences. What if you take these beliefs to their logical conclusion. To that end, this is a primer on philosophy (& as deep as I want to go. Ugh)
It also clearly demonstrates the illogic of the oppressor vs oppressed narrative. The logical end to its illogical premise is to force (oppress) others to agreement and obedience.
The story these concepts are woven through is compelling. I was intrigued by the characters and storyline. Although, I thought the killer was just an egomaniacal toxic male who always needs to be ‘right’.
I was not entirely pleased with the conclusion of both the story or the philosophy. I actually think there isn’t a single better conclusion because reality and philosophy don’t have clean endings.

1468. A young priest, Christopher Fairfax, arrives in a remote Exmoor village to conduct the funeral of his predecessor. The land around is strewn with ancient artifacts - coins, fragments of glass, human bones - which the old parson used to collect. Did his obsession with the past lead to his death? Fairfax becomes determined to discover the truth. Over the course of the next six days, everything he believes - about himself, his faith, and the history of his world - will be tested to destruction.

Great premise that was poorly executed. The character development was minimal and the story ended in the middle.

The graphic description of the sexual excitement with pedophilia and murder almost made me stop. I don’t know if any of us should let those images exist in our minds

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Brought tears at amazing humans
Revisado: 01-21-24
Humans are amazing. This story reminds of how tough life is and how we move forward in spite of it all. It reminds us that the greatest strength lies in “the swing” of community.
And It reminds us that Germany’s justification for killing civilians is evil no matter where it arises.

Much better than expected
Revisado: 12-23-23
I’m not particularly mechanical and don’t know my engines. But the person, the drive, the intelligence of Rudolph Diesel along with development of the diesel engine was really interesting. I need to listen again to the mechanics because I understand now how unique and brilliant that engine is. The mystery of his death and conclusion was an intriguing twist.

Historia
Can changing your thoughts improve your health? We tend to live our lives as though our ailments—our stiff knees or frayed nerves or diminished eyesight—can change only in one direction: for the worse. Award-winning social psychologist Ellen J. Langer’s life’s work proves the fault in this negative outlook as well as the healing power of its alternative: mindfulness—the process of active noticing where we are not bound by past experience or conventional wisdom. In The Mindful Body, Dr. Langer unpacks her assumption-busting findings and outlines her bold new theory of mind-body unity.
