It’s ok
Revisado: 01-07-25
I get that it’s difficult to write someone else’s story, from notes, after they have past. But it does come across as a bunch of gossip rather than documented truth. Listened to the whole thing. But probably wouldn’t do it again.

Historia
On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact; close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained undetected by the navy for nearly four days and nights. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to stay alive, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia. By the time rescue arrived, all but 317 men had died. The captain's subsequent court-martial left many questions unanswered

By the time Fred is three years old, he can play hymns on the piano without missing a note. In kindergarten, he amazes adults with Chopin. Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Good story, a bit over dramatic though
Revisado: 06-16-24
The story is very interesting and is worth listening to. Some of the writing is overly dramatic and the narrator is also too dramatic across the entire story. The narrator’s voice is pleasing to listen to, but if he had used more variations in his drama, it would have been much better. By the time real drama comes you’re so used to the dramatic voice that it doesn’t feel any different. However, I’m very glad the author didn’t read it!

Artificial intelligence entrepreneur Max Bennett chronicles the five “breakthroughs” in the evolution of human intelligence and reveals what brains of the past can tell us about the AI of tomorrow.

Such potential! But serious disappointment
Revisado: 06-13-24
The concept of this book was excellent! As I started listening I was incredibly excited about what this book would teach. Then, the science errors started coming out. Scientists examined hominid history through carbon-14 dating…uh, no, C-14 doesn’t go back that far. The most egregious being that the Permo-Triassic extinction event was caused by an asteroid, killed all the dinosaurs and started the age of mammals! Seriously?? Any elementary student knows that describes the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction (KT)! There were others, but these are examples that are widely known by even non-scientists. So, if you can’t get such simple facts right, how can I possibly believe any of the other more complex stuff? Very, very disappointing for a book with so much potential!

Historia
In early 2020, the world was on edge. An ominous virus was spreading on different continents, and no one knew what the coming weeks would bring. Far from the hot spots, the cruise ship Zaandam, owned by Holland America, was preparing to sail from Buenos Aires, Argentina, loaded with 1,200 passengers—Americans, Europeans and South Americans, plus 600 crew. Within days, people aboard begin to fall sick. With only two doctors aboard and few medical supplies to test for or treat COVID-19, and with dwindling food and water, the ship wanders the oceans on an unthinkable journey.

This is a great telling of what happens to various “levels” of people at the start of the pandemic. Mistakes, hopes, tragedies, fears, and suffering. I particularly liked how some people’s “me” focus is contrasted with others “we” focus.

Historia
On September 1, 1894, two forest fires converged on the town of Hinckley, Minnesota, trapping over 2,000 people. Daniel J. Brown recounts the events surrounding the fire in the first and only book to chronicle the dramatic story that unfolded. Whereas Oregon's famous "Biscuit" fire in 2002 burned 350,000 acres in one week, the Hinckley fire did the same damage in five hours. The fire created its own weather, including hurricane-strength winds, bubbles of plasmalike glowing gas, and 200-foot-tall flames.

A collection of pithy sayings
Revisado: 11-15-23
Nothing but a collection of pithy sayings that are supposed to inspire you. They did absolutely nothing for me. I don’t need a list of people who took walks during the day, or which artists thought naps were important to them.
