Historia
Summer, 2021. Nell has come home at her family's insistence to celebrate an anniversary. Fifty years ago, her father wrote The Golden Bones. Part picture book, part treasure hunt, Sir Frank Churcher created a fairy story about Elinore, a murdered woman whose skeleton was scattered all over England. Clues and puzzles in the pages of The Golden Bones led readers to seven sites where jewels were buried—gold and precious stones, each a different part of a skeleton. One by one, the tiny golden bones were dug up until only Elinore's pelvis remained hidden.

If you like twisty tales by shrill self-pitying egoists …
Revisado: 12-27-22
This ghastly tale is largely presented in first person by a deeply irritating teller. The complicated events have one flash of interest, the way delusion and obsession works in conspiracy theory. The writing is deeply pretentious.

Historia
On a normal day, in a normal house, on a normal street, wife and mother Fran has had enough. She packs a case, leaves a note for her bullying husband, Pete, and one for her beloved 21-year-old son, Harry, and heads to the airport - and freedom. In another house, on another street, Helena is desperately baiting her husband, Jack, into a fight. These days it feels like the only way to get Jack to take notice of her. Passionate, volatile, increasingly fragile, Helena is fast running out of hope.

A good tale but a bit slow
Revisado: 08-03-21
I bought this because the story sounded good and Marvelous Phillida Nash was one of the two readers/performers. She was great, the other narrator had an annoying accent, to my ears anyway. The moral of the story certainly suggests that enduring abuse in marriage for years until the man/woman of your dreams appears to run off with is a sad fact of the human condition.

Historia
When Hollywood wants to do a remake of the film that made Tode Hall famous, India and Egbert are delighted. They envisage a summer of free money and star-studded dinner parties ahead. But the Hall is soon overrun by wardrobe trucks and catering tents and lusty, insecure actors squabbling about nudity clauses. When the movie's producers threaten to sue over the exact colour of Tode Hall's rolling lawns, India and Egbert realise that having a film crew on their doorstep isn't such a breeze after all.

Better heard than read!
Revisado: 07-15-21
This wacky tale of stately homes, noblesse oblige, and film makers lays on satire with a heavy hand, but it is so engagingly performed that I enjoyed it very much, the characters, be they ever so over-drawn, came to life and laughter, from the dowager lady ghost and amateur sleuth, the Italian butler, the phlegmatic Alice, Manager, her triplet youths, the untitled Mr Egbert and his posh wife India, and mad Sir Ekbert - their accents reminding the listener of the you-know-who’s) and a string of neurotic luvvies and their attendants. Not much of a plot but the characters are performed so charmingly that, as India would have said Such Fun LOL!!!

Historia
As President Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves. The result is one of the few White House memoirs to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the president, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a president for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation.

A poisonous presidency
Revisado: 07-02-20
Bolton offers few personal opinions of President Trump or White House staff. He lets events described speak for themselves. I do not share Bolton’s world view and I am not an American, but I found this a very interesting listen. It shows how decisions are made, or as the book describes not made, at the highest level in the USA, and how Trumps neo-isolationist views and view of foreign relations as ‘deals’ and determinations to resist and where possible undo the world that has been made by his predecessors.

Historia
Sir Tode has finally died at the age of 93. Lady Tode wants to leave the country to spend her remaining years in Capri. Unfortunately, her three tiresome children are either unwilling, or unable (too mad, too lefty or too happy in Australia), to take on management of their large and important home, so the mantle passes to a distant relative and his glamorous wife. Not long after the new owners take over, Lady Tode is found dead in the mausoleum. Accident? Or is there more going on behind the scenes of Tode Hall than an outsider would ever guess?

Daisy Waugh must have enjoyed writing this!
Revisado: 02-22-20
And I enjoyed listening to the faaabulous narration by Penelope Rawlins. What jolly fun, especially the liberal sprinkling of literary allusions. Trust it will become a series of books in print, audio and film.

Awful beyond beleif
Revisado: 03-04-18
If you want to listen to about eight hours of tiresome self indulgent raving by a seriously stupid self obsessed woman at the Centre of an improbable, poorly written tale, read in an irritating English voice, go ahead and waste your money. I fast forwarded though it hoping it would improve, nope. Worse and worse. I wish I could review it with no stars.
