A Few Good Tips
Revisado: 07-18-21
I liked the international county specific examples and testimonials. I liked that even though I study fraud there were several I was not aware of yet.
I disliked the repeating of common sense advice until it became patronizing, much of the information already outdated, minimal guidance on what to do when scanned.
I would recommend this book to a vulnerable older person and anyone online or traveling with a naive nature or cognitive impairment

Historia
On a November morning in 2015, Christopher Jackson waited for his fiancée, Angila Wilder, to pick him up from work as she always did. But this time, she didn’t show - and Christopher’s calls went unanswered. The police found what looked like a scene from a horror movie at their home. The backdoor kicked in. A bedroom splattered with blood. And a pregnant young woman violently stabbed to death.

Death Sentence drags on to Absurdity
Revisado: 06-18-21
This starts off as a complex well articulated and researched true crime book. The narrator is great throughout. I did initially get a sense of the actual story and the characters (people) in it which made me want to like this book.
However the book truly nose dives in the final third after Velma convicted and sentenced to death into sentimental pseudo inspirational drivel about how This woman found Jesus and became a great evangelical lady in prison who even was in touch with Billy Graham.
Although the author seems biased and hoodwinked it’s obvious that this woman was grossly unchanged dragging on her appeals toward the great suffering of her own family, their families and she (nor the author) seems not to care whatsoever about the victims or their families. I would go so far as to call this book disrespectful to the actual victims. I have lost respect for this author and I am a Christian myself - just not an idiot.

Historia
This book is for listeners of true crime podcasts and audiences of both fiction and true-crime nonfiction. It's the true story of first-generation Irish-American nurse Jane Toppan, born as Honora Kelley. Jane Toppan was absolutely a monster, but she did not start out that way. When Jane was a young child, her father abandoned her and her sister to the Boston Female Asylum. From there, Jane was indentured to a wealthy family who changed her name, never adopted her, and wrote her out of the will.

Great until the final third
Revisado: 06-15-21
Despite a rather naive preamble by author (read by author) the book was well paced, detailed, interesting and full of intelligently crafted nuance that felt true to the spirit of this woman’s biographical story with info from source material.
However once the media gets involved in the case and the author describes what protagonist’s internal monologue might have been refuting the simplicity of the hyperbolic slander about herself, the author takes dramatic liberties that make the author sound more like a millennial grad school drop out then a woman with the paradigm or verbiage of time period.

Inspirational story of Resilience
Revisado: 06-13-21
I cannot say enough good things about this true crime and autobiographical account. It’s a painful story but it needs to be told because so much more needs to be done for neglected abused children, vulnerable adults and all marginalized and stigmatized people who fall through the cracks.
For those who say it’s too “shocking” to believe that is because most human trafficking, cult and child/domestic abuse victims never have the opportunity to tell their story.

Historia
Serial killers have been a mystery for years. They commit the most monstrous acts known to man, yet we still know very little about what makes them do what they do. They kill with no remorse and have destroyed families' and individuals' lives many times over. These killers are at times ordinary folks that one wouldn’t even realize was a cold blooded murderer. From the Zodiac Killer to the Night Stalker, all have kept us in fear until caught.

Audible won’t let me return this book that I purchased less than one minute ago With my one monthly credit. His voice is absolutely excruciating to listen to actually. The reason for all the returns is their inventory’s lack of quality and this book is a good example yet the member is penalized.

Kevin Pierce narration overdone, stories ok
Revisado: 06-12-21
I was a fan of this narrator prior to this purchase but there was something about hearing him read in that exact same way from so many different authors (across the talent spectrum) back to back to back for over 100 chapters that eventually rendered the sound of his voice absurd as well as the material itself.
Yes to bang for your buck and some classic true crime stories covered but the organization of book is poor and very mediocre. 3 stars for being long and memorable and covering so much ground.

Loved this book
Revisado: 06-09-21
As someone who is a student of paranormal, forensics and history I absolutely found this book fascinating. The stories were fast paced but well told. The essences were captured of complex mysteries That left me wondering. I also heard some cases I was peripherally familiar with in a vivid way that brought story to life even from other time periods.
This book is a time machine, a tribute to wonder, narrator and author just fit, I listened to it twice and I never do that. I will continue to follow this unique and talented author.

Historia
It was a crime that captured national attention. In the idyllic suburb of Glen Ridge, New Jersey, four of the town's most popular high school athletes were accused of raping a retarded young woman while nine of their teammates watched. What went wrong in this seemingly flawless American town? In search of the answer, Bernard Lefkowitz takes the listener behind Glen Ridge's manicured façade into the basement that was the scene of the rape, into the mansions on "Millionaire's Row", into the All-American high school, and finally into the courtroom where justice itself was on trial.

Revisado: 06-05-21
I was planning on giving up my Audible membership then I stumbled on this quality piece of investigative journalism. I really can’t say enough about how well written this was. True crime in the best sense - the author seeks out truth from all possible angles.
Crime in the sense that the author writes with a sense of justice, injustice and all the history, politics, culture that get in between. Bravo.

Well done but court transcripts drag on
Revisado: 05-27-21
Well done Ann Rule is great as ever stocked full of forensic and human character details. She def brings this memorable tragic story to life. Cons are that Ann Rule, as usual, is a bit one dimensional and moralistic about the minor characters dividing all those even peripherally involved into broad strokes of good and Evil.
The narrator was really good EXCEPT for she made every witness who responded “yes” or “no” during cross examination as if a question mark at the end. Every single witness on every single statement. Did X happen? … No?! Or Yes?! This began to grate on my nerves but overall great book
