Love her voice. Love everything about this book. Recommend the paperback, which is much more detailed and deep. Recommend taking one’s time with this, and or reading it over and over. Pay it forward. Good advice for all gender identities. Share it. Thank you, Clarissa 🤗

I’ve wanted to read A Room With A View for a long time and enjoyed every word. Perfect in every way. Will read/listen again and again.

I’d expected to enjoy this, but after two hours couldn’t wait to finish. I can’t help thinking a different narrator would’ve brought the Long Room to life; alas, the voice chosen for this novel is better suited for fairy-tales, as that is what it seemed I was listening to.
I’d read in a review that Stephen’s character is unbelievable, being that he is very sensitive, but I disagree; some of the most beautiful sonnets written by men. Stephen, though he has many endearing inner qualities, is sorely lacking as a romantic interest; the sort of man who creeps around, but never makes a move. I wanted to like him, but couldn’t. I could not like anyone in this book, though I tried. I have nothing against the quiet novel about ordinary people, but this is like a plain bowl of oatmeal and nothing in the cupboard to flavor it.
I paid meticulous attention throughout, but lost track during the last few chapters and now have no idea what exactly happened, nor do I care to go back and find out.
If I were the novelist, would be furious that something I’d made an effort at is reduced by the voice; such beautiful writing deserves a narrator with more panache; near painful to listen to.

I have three audible versions of The Waves: Davies’ dramatized production, which is abridged and semi-inaccurate, possibly for creative reasons; the unabridged narration by Frances Jeater, which is gentle and stream-of-consciousness sounding (pleasantly hypnotic if you are a Woolf fan); and this, narrated by Julia Franklin. All are excellent, but recommend this narration if you are new to Woolf and plan on finishing The Waves, as Franklin does an excellent job clarifying the nuances and complexities of this beautiful novel. The abridged dramatized version produced and directed by Davies is also well worth listening to, whether you are new to Woolf, or a seasoned votary.

A book to reach for again and again; one to know by heart. Pass it on. May Ray’s books live forever. A celebration of life; light, dark and grey. Ray had a gift of finding silver-linings.

Narrator: very good, but I would’ve enjoyed it more if the narrator’s voice had been less boyish. I understand why Baker was chosen; I’m just not a fan of nasally tones.

Somewhat like listening to a fairy tale, and since the story is told from a girl’s perspective, I came to appreciate the emphasis on nearly every word. Listening to this made me notice how beautiful the English language can be.

I was transported and could see every scene in my mind’s eye as though watching a film. This is a mix of rose-colored memory and hazy realism written through that filter of maturity and experience we all come to tell our stories from as we grow up and realize the truth of things we didn’t fully understand as children. In spite of the odds, this is a story of beauty and perseverance.

I’m looking for more of Sharon Washington’s work!

The Robber Bride isn’t what I expected. After The Blind Assassin, which feels much darker (though humorous at times) I was hoping this would be as enthralling.

Robber Bride seems as though it was written quickly. Grocery-store fiction; the newsprint pulp best-sellers found in cheap rows on wire shelves as you pass by on your way to the checkout counter. Entertaining, but not the way I prefer to spend money.

Good beach-read (though you’ll be sunburnt to finish this) bathtubbing reads (hope you have a gigantic water heater), big giant laugh-track mass-market checkout-from-your-long-stressful-day for a solid week sort of read. Fun, but too many parties night after night, with as many hangovers. Funny, life of said party at high points throughout the book, but followed by wee hours when one feels it’s time to go home.

I listened at high-octane mode; 1.5 & 2; fast track to complete the destination. My God! But go Boyce!

I won’t go into detail, except to remark: narration and the charming crackle in the background of the recording, like an old 45, are perfect; intentional or not. On first listen, I fell in love with the story, Margaret’s style and the sound...just what I always look for, but seldom find —to be whisked away; to forget where I am.
There’s no other audible book quite like this one.

Henry & June Audiolibro Por Anais Nin arte de portada

I’ve been kind because Nin was young

Trigger warning: In her late twenties at the time this was written, Nin was self-centered, selfish and full of naive ideas. To her credit she was aware of these attitudes to a good degree and since these were journal entries, knew she would not be shamed or censored, and was possibly, largely honest. But there is much aggrandizement and excessive desire boasted about which sounds pushed and false, as though she was attempting to make herself believe she was more reckless than she actually was. I didn’t fall for it. Nin even mentioned that Miller and her therapist noticed similar shades in her personality and then clearly took advantage; she also of them. Her put-on sexuality was vengeful, but she knew that; it was also an awakening and a reckoning. Ultimately she wrote about a plan to lure her father (who sexually abused her) to bed, which she did do when she was thirty. This isn’t really about Henry and June as much as it is about how she worked through her own sexual abuse wounds, inadequacies and fears by having sex with all those closest to her. In that way she faced full-force what initially made her feel repressed. Her activities seem to have strengthened her, made her feel powerful and confident enough to take her ultimate revenge and control over her father, probably laugh to herself afterward and walk away, completely flipping the tables on him. I’m certainly not saying that’s the road to take, just that she did. I’ve not read the remainder of her journals, and question much of what she says. She was a notorious liar. Keep in mind, this book is part of the entirety of her journals. For myself I’m glad this book is relatively short. I found her endless ramblings about her ‘passions’ and detailed descriptions of her sexual escapades tiresome very early on in the book. Her character reminds me somewhat, in attitude, of Leslie in William Styron’s Sophie’s Choice, with the exception of course that she actually did just about everything she described; or did she? Still, she had great insight into her own mind and found a path, albeit a dangerous one, through her pain. I’ll be reading more of her journals, so am anxious to know more about her as she matured.
