Historia
When Sophie, the least interesting of the Talbot sisters, lands her philandering brother-in-law backside first in a goldfish pond in front of all society, she becomes the target of very public aristocratic scorn. Her only choice is to flee London, vowing to start a new life far from the aristocracy. Unfortunately, the carriage in which she stows away isn't saving her from ruin. It's filled with it.

Breathy narration ruins the day
Revisado: 04-27-25
The story followed the standard formula- boy meets girl, they deny interest in each other, then realize they love each other.
The narration was unbearable. Breathy and exaggerated, every tense moment was narrated with ex.tra. punc.tu.a.tion. The coup de grace was the Scottish laird read with an Irish brogue..

Horrible Narrator, couldn't finish
Revisado: 07-15-24
I really like Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series, and this seemed to be in a similar vein, but the narrator was so bad that I couldn't finish it. she gives every female character a childlike voice and since everyone sounds alike, it is hard to follow the story.

a study in stupid decisions
Revisado: 09-06-23
The Good: The story is different from most other WW II books, in that it is about a family in Germany just before the war. The narration is very good- the reader does a good job of using different voices for each character.
The Bad: The characters make unbelievably STUPID decisions. So many times, as I listened, I found myself screaming "Don't do it!!" and exclaiming "Seriously?? Are you kidding me right now??"
The Ugly: I like long books, and love series. Many books I listen to are 18+ hours. This "series" seems more like one book broken onto 4 segments, so I paid 4 credits to listen to this story.

Historia
Authors Roger Manvell and Heinrich Fraenkel, notable biographers of the World War II German leaders Joseph Goebbels and Herman Goring, delve into the life of one of the most sinister, clever, and successful of all the Nazi leaders: Heinrich Himmler. As the head of the feared SS, Himler supervised the extermination of millions. Here is the story of how a seemingly ordinary boy grew into an obsessive and superstitious man who ventured into herbalism, astrology, and homeopathic medicine before finally turning to the “science” of racial purity and the belief in the superiority of the Aryan people.

I really want to finish
Revisado: 12-15-21
One would think that the ability to correctly pronounce German names would be a requirement of the narrator of this book! The narrator's inability to do so is very distracting. Every time he pronounces Hoess (Höss in German) as "HO-Ess" it is like nails on a chalkboard! I hope I can make it through this reading; right now, it is not likely!

Historia
At the height of WWII, five idealistic young Americans receive a mysterious letter from the OSS, asking them if they are willing to fight for their country. The men and women from very different backgrounds - a Texan athlete with German roots, an upper-crust son of a French mother and a wealthy businessman, a dirt-poor Midwestern fly fisherman, an orphaned fashion designer, and a ravishingly beautiful female fencer - all answer the call of duty, but each for a secret reason of his or her own. They bond immediately, in a group code-named Dragonfly.

Interesting story with decent narration, if you can overlook the awful pronunciation of French words by one narrator, and equally awful pronunciation of German words by another.

Another vote for horrible narration
Revisado: 03-06-17
Where does Point of Origin rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I love Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta series. These are some of the best stories I have in my library.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator's breathy staccato voice was difficult to listen to, and disrupted the flow of the story. Since the narrator does not change her voice very much for the different characters, it is not always apparent who is speaking.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
If I were reading or if it was being narrated by CJ Critt (as were the first books) there is a scene where Dr. Scarpetta approaches remains with dread, and that would have been moving. But the narrator's overly dramatic reading of the scene diminished the affect.
Any additional comments?
This book seems slightly more graphic, it may be because it deals with burned remains, it may be because it describes in detail some of the ways the remains are examined.

Awful Narration
Revisado: 05-12-15
What would have made Storm Clouds Rolling In better?
I can't comment on the story because I couldn't get past the first bit. The narrator is so overly dramatic in her reading and attempt at clear.ly.ann.un.ci.a.ting. every syllable that I couldn't list further.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Outlander
Would you be willing to try another one of Christine Cunningham Smith’s performances?
No

Not a Sequel
Revisado: 02-22-13
What did you love best about The Waiting?
This is a very nice story - the characters are well developed and believable. The only thing that I was disappointed in is that it is not a sequel to the first story. Since this is a series, I was surprised to hear that not only were these completely different characters, but it takes place during a different time period.

Jack is fantastic!
Revisado: 07-21-12
Where does Whiskey Sour rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is a fantastic AUDIObook, because there are two narrators, a male who narrates all of the male roles and a female who narrates all of the female roles. Both narrators do a fantastic job of using different voices for each character, so it makes the story come alive. It is like watching a movie without a picture!
Any additional comments?
Be aware that this audiobook contains graphic descriptions of the crime, both during the commission of said crimes, and the scene. There is also some "rough" language - watch out for those f-bombs! You might not want to listen to this within earshot of children or the easily offended.
