Historia
Twelve-year-old Fee is a shy Korean American boy and a newly named section leader of the first sopranos in his local boys' choir. But when Fee learns how the director treats his section leaders, he is so ashamed he says nothing of the abuse, not even when Peter, his best friend, is in line to be next. When the director is arrested, Fee tries to forgive himself for his silence. But when Peter takes his own life, Fee blames only himself.

Chee weaves beautiful prose in this heartbreaking story that questions identity, morality, and loyalty under the terrible umbrella of trauma.

Okay, okay, okay, I guess I should have read more of the description. While there were genuinely sweet moments in this, most of this was barfable platitudes.

Historia
Author Leslie Lehr wants to talk about boobs. She’s gone from size AA to DDD and everything between, from puberty to motherhood, enhancement to cancer, and beyond. And she’s not alone - these are classic life stages for women today. At turns funny and heartbreaking, A Boob’s Life explores both the joys and hazards inherent to living in a woman’s body. Lehr deftly blends her personal narrative with national history, starting in the 1960s with the women’s liberation movement and moving to the current feminist dialogue and what it means to be a woman.

Yes - and also nooooooo
Revisado: 07-07-21
This heteronormative part-memoir/part-social science text addresses some complex issues about the role of breasts in society. However, it lacks some editing, exists largely as a space for the author - by all accounts a traditionally attractive, privileged white woman - to air out her own guilt and biases.

Historia
When Mary Todd meets Abraham Lincoln in Springfield in the winter of 1840, he is on no one's shortlist to be president. Rough and reticent, he's a country lawyer lacking money and manners, living above a dry goods shop, but with a gift for oratory. Mary, a quick, self-possessed debutante with a tireless interest in debates and elections, at first finds him an enigma. "I can only hope," she tells his roommate, the handsome, charming Joshua Speed, "that his waters being so very still, they also run deep."

Historia
Adichie illuminates a seminal moment in modern African history: Biafra’s impassioned struggle to establish an independent republic in southeastern Nigeria during the late 1960s. We experience this tumultuous decade alongside five unforgettable characters: Ugwu, a 13-year-old houseboy working for Odenigbo, a university professor full of revolutionary zeal; Olanna, the professor’s beautiful young mistress who's abandoned her life in Lagos for a dusty town and her lover’s charm; and Richard, a shy young Englishman infatuated with Olanna’s willful twin sister Kainene.

I love Adichie, but I found this book a bit lacking though I can’t quite pinpoint exactly what it lacked.
Performance-wise, the narrator was excellent until she had to do an American accent. Yikes.

Compelling Story; Problematic Narration
Revisado: 10-27-19
The story of school shootings is, unfortunately, one that needs a place in YA. This story does a great job of weaving perspectives. Also unfortunate are some narrators’ uses of appropriated accents that did not serve to enhance the story but rather felt pretty racist.

This is not your mother's memoir. In The Chronology of Water, Lidia Yuknavitch expertly moves the listener through issues of gender, sexuality, violence, and the family from the point of view of a lifelong swimmer turned artist. In writing that explores the nature of memoir itself, her story traces the effect of extreme grief on a young woman's developing sexuality that some define as untraditional because of her attraction to both men and women.
