Some still profit from Nazi inhumanity
Revisado: 04-22-25
Incredible story, well researched and written, about indelible corruption from Nazis profits that continue to tarnish our society today. How can perfidy go unpunished, un-repaid, and even unacknowledged after all these years, save but a few who have inherited massive wealth? If a grandparent who died long ago truly doesn’t matter and everyone should simply move on, then those, with inherited wealth who say that, should give it away and move on. See if it a grandparent’s existence truly has no lingering effect today.

Historia
Is what you see all there is? Look again. Playful, frightening, even shocking - the stories in this collection blur the lines between illusion and reality. This is a writer at the height of his power, making the listener think, making them laugh, and sometimes making them want to look away while holding their gaze. Stories here are set in London, in Byzantium, in the ghetto, in the Andes, in a printer's shop in Spain. The characters include a murderer, a writer, a detective, a man in a cave, a man in a mirror, two little boys, a prison door, and the author himself.

Mesmerizing characters. I felt like Mr. Okri was leading me through plots and cities I’d never before experienced. I knew I’d be safe and that the journey would be worth taking.

Gripping plot

Narrator got the character personalities great. The plot and characters were a bit like Agatha Christie. As did this book, I like when books portray a range of relationships including healthy relationships, nuanced perspectives and underlying motivations, using theory of mind.

Great content and narration
Revisado: 06-06-23
Comprehensive, well researched and well written book. I almost didn’t get it because someone else said they didn’t like the narration, but I appreciated the narrator’s tone, cadence and assumption of appropriate characterizations when reading quotes. I tend to listen to nonfiction at 1.2 speed, maybe that made a difference. I learned that open communication with sometimes small or questionable concerns between different people and groups, with someone tracking and putting all the info together, could develop a more accurate portrayal of someone’s threat risk.

Excellent explanation of totalitarianism and attachment
Revisado: 05-28-22
I love the personal stories interwoven with attachment theory, for a comprehensive and understandable explanation of how attachment theory and assessment can create trauma bonds and reveal continued unresolved traumas. Being able to recognize the underlying mechanics of totalitarian/coercive dynamics is crucial to having that ‘Ah-ha’ realization and running the other way, and protecting/ advocating for the safety of possible vulnerable children within.

Historia
Dostoevsky's life was marked by brilliance and brutality. Sentenced to death as a young revolutionary, he survived mock execution and Siberian exile to live through a time of seismic change in Russia, eventually being accepted into the Tsar's inner circle. Somehow, amidst all this, he found time to write short stories, journalism, and novels. In Dostoevsky in Love, Alex Christofi weaves carefully chosen excerpts of the author's work with the historical context to form an illuminating and often surprising whole.

I love the book and narrator
Revisado: 04-23-22
I could not stop “Dostoevsky in Love” until it was over. Significant experiences and relationships throughout Dostoevsky’s life are presented so that they are both interesting on their own as well as interwoven to create a rich portrayal of Dostoevsky. My awareness of the man, his life and works have been gratefully and immeasurably enhanced. The narrator is wonderful.
