Great Narration

George Guidall’s reading is always first rate. This book could be tough to follow with its complex characters and dialogue but George makes clear. A must read after Beowulf.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Excellent narration of Ngaio Marsh’s first Scotland Yard tale. A fun read but a weak plot in general. Her later novels are much improved. Still fun to listen to.

Historia
Ngaio Marsh’s most popular novel begins when a young New Zealander’s first contact with the English gentry is the body of Lord Wutherford - with a meat skewer through the eye.... The Lampreys had plenty of charm - but no cash. They all knew they were peculiar - and rather gloried in it. The double and triple charades, for instance, with which they would entertain their guests - like rich but awful Uncle Gabriel, who was always such a bore.

Everything about this book is excellent. I’ve read most of the Inspector Alleyn mysteries and this is my favorite Ngaio Marsh book so far. I wish that Philip Franks had narrated all her books. Highly recommended.

Revisado: 10-31-24
This is Chandler’s longest and most complex story. I had read it 30 or 40 years ago but got so much more from the Audible reading. Raymond Chandler is an extraordinary writer. I wish he had written more novels. Highly recommended.

Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Historia
Phoebe Wycherly was missing two months before her wealthy father hired Archer to find her. That was plenty of time for a young girl who wanted to disappear to do so thoroughly—or for someone to make her disappear. And before he could locate the Wycherly girl, Archer had to reckon with the Wycherly woman, Phoebe’s mother, an eerily unmaternal blonde who kept too many residences, had too many secrets, and left too many corpses in her wake.

Good story and good narration, but too many peripheral characters
Revisado: 05-09-24
I love Ross Macdonald’s mysteries, but it was a challenge with this one to keep track of so many characters and their relationships to each other. I made a list of the characters as I listened and referred to that list often. It was worth the effort tho’ because Macdonald never disappoints me.
