Best yet in the series
Revisado: 08-04-24
By this book 12, I would like to think that, save for the most diehard trolls and bots, readers (listeners) who have made it this far are fans. this last group will not be disappointed, as I believe this to be the author's best work this far, My hat's (no, not a pointy one) is also of to the amazing narrator who brought this work to life. I gave 5 stars, only because I could not give more!

off to a great start
Revisado: 07-04-24
The opening salvo to the latest series to enter the Aleron Kong universe, Alpha does not disappoint. Kong does an especially good job of conveying the natural confusion and sense of wonder experienced as earth connects to the labyrinth. As usual, a complex and flawed protagonist is introduced, as he begins to explore the compelling game dynamics as they are being formed (and forced by mysterious characters) into existence. Where will this lead? I can't wait to find out in future installments!

Historia
The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

Historia
My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

Character Redux
Revisado: 09-06-22
There are many reviews that chide the author for "borrowing" personas from his other series for use in this one, and they're not wrong. Think of this like an episode of Star Trek where the crew is, for some reason, entirely changed into different roles (maybe even species), but the audience recognizes everyone anyway. It's kind of like that, only without the return to "normal" at the end of the episode. I still enjoyed the book and Bray's performance (which ascribed the expected voices to these borrowed personas, exacerbating the effect). It's just an (unexpected) opportunity lost to delve into entirely new characters rather than recasting the same ensemble.

Horton jumps a shark
Revisado: 03-11-22
In 1977, the Fonz donned water skis and proceeded to jump the shark, a phrase that has become an idiom that fairly accurately applies to Boondock Pilgrims. The author created an absurd machination then doubled down with an even more ridiculous cult. I was really disappointed by these choices because I expected more based on the quality of his other works (which I thoroughly enjoyed).

Historia
Dominic Hart was screwed. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, no money for treatment, and an athletic scholarship hanging by a thread...he didn't have many options. But the university clinic had offered him a free video game. Some sort of "therapy", they said. A way to while away the hours until he kicked the bucket. Yay. What Dom wasn't expecting was to get swindled by a surly casino owner right out of the gate. Or get dropped in a backwater hellhole voted the “number one worst starting location in Awaken Online".

Did David Stifle run out of voices?
Revisado: 02-19-22
Fairly early in this book we are introduced to a major character (Adrian) that the narrator voiced using the exact same character voice as another major character in this universe (a god called the Hippie). Being an astute reader (listener), I was sure that this wasn't a coincidence and that soon this character would be revealed to be the Hippie, but that never happened. I was wrong about any connection between the characters, but was distracted by this. Did Stifle run out of voices in his repertoire and had to re-use this one? Apparently, and disappointingly, as it detracted from an otherwise very good addition to this universe. There did seem to be some mechanics challenges in the main character's leveling vs stats (i.e., I didn't quite get how he didn't level at all for so long since his training should have conferred experience that would have resulted in leveling) and timing (his stat bumps from training seemed to occur in a very compressed timeframe). Despite these challenges, I really liked this addition to the series and look forward to getting back to Jason next time.

The protagonists suddenly vanished
Revisado: 06-04-21
Love the antics of Skippy & Joe? I know I do. So I was surprised when, instead of a few paragraphs about what was going on elsewhere, the middle half of this book simply switched to a separate storyline, before (eventually) flipping back just as abruptly for (almost) the rest of the book. Dear author and/or editor, your lack of faith in your readers/listeners to track both threads of they were interleaved was disheartening. I am binging this series so I found this sudden and complete shift in storylines jarring. It may be totally relevant to the arc, but seemed like this could have just as easily been a "side quest," to borrow a litrpg term. the performance was again excellent as this narrator is perfectly matched to this material.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts
Revisado: 03-24-21
Alaron Kong MD has expanded the universe of the Land in this separate series from the Land. While an entirely disconnected story based on mechanics and magic systems unique to this storyline (as compared to the systems presented in the Land). the possibilities suggested by these disparate systems are intriguing to speculate about. I look forward to seeing where Kong takes both series as his universe continues to take shape to the light of myself and his other readers.
