Historia
Malcolm Gladwell has long relished the opportunity to skewer the upper echelons of higher education, from the institution of U.S. News & World Report’s Best College rankings to the LSATs to the luxe Bowdoin College cafeteria. I Hate the Ivy League: Riffs and Rants on Elite Education, upends the traditional thinking around how education should work and tries to get to the bottom of why we often reward the wrong people.

This was well written. I couldn't put it down. help me gain insight as to when an international reporter goes through, including a lot of the nuances. It's a pity that he couldn't have been Governor of Oregon.

Historia
Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come. Patriot is Navalny’s final letter to the world: a moving account of his last years spent in the most brutal prison on earth; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so deeply; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life.

Historia
Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement.

Critique about American evangelicals written by an evangelical
Revisado: 01-07-25
This is an extremely well-written and well-researched book about what has happened to Evangelical churches in the United States in the past few decades. It is thought-provoking and fair, and it is articulate about what needs to change.

Historia
In 2004, journalist Bill Bishop coined the term "the big sort". Armed with startling new demographic data, he made national news in a series of articles showing how Americans have been sorting themselves into alarmingly homogeneous communities - not by region or by state but by city and even neighborhood. Over the past three decades, we have been choosing the neighborhoods (and churches and news shows) compatible with our lifestyles and beliefs.

This is an absolutely fantastic book about how the country has become much more polarized because we seek out like-minded people in neighborhoods, churches, and clubs. I wish it could be updated for 2024.

Historia
The last acceptable form of prejudice in America is based on class and executed through state-sponsored economic discrimination. While the American meritocracy officially denounces prejudice based on race and gender, it has spawned a new form of bias against those with less education and income. Millions of working-class Americans have their opportunity blocked by exclusionary snob zoning. These government policies make housing unaffordable, frustrate the goals of the civil rights movement, and lock in inequality in our urban and suburban landscapes.

Revisado: 09-17-23
This is an incredible book about how pernicious zoning is for less privileged people of any race or ethnicity. It is well researched and articulate. Although I thought I was familiar with the ills of zoning, I didn't realize it was so much worse in the US than other developed countries. He makes a convincing case that zoning is hurting all of us and that we desperately need zoning reform. This is a must read for everyone who cares about housing.

he may be right about some of the things that he says, but other than being overly optimistic, I don't think that this adds and very much to the climate debate. this is not long on hubris but is short on facts. some of the facts are inaccurate.

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

Very Insightful
Revisado: 05-12-22
I loved this book. I found it particularly insightful about the comparison between the United Kingdom, the US, and Russia. Her description of how difficult it is growing up in Northeast England and the prejudices she encountered was particularly interesting, as were her comparisons to the United Kingdom and the United states. The inside view of the Trump White House reiterated many other counts as to how dysfunctional it was.

Historia
Ukraine's sudden prominence in American politics has compounded an already-widespread misunderstanding of what is actually happening in the nation. In the American media, Ukraine has come to signify an inherently corrupt place, rather than a real country struggling in the face of great challenges. Ukraine: What Everyone Needs to Know addresses Ukraine's relations with the West, particularly the United States, from the perspective of Ukrainians.
