Historia
In Sarum, Edward Rutherfurd weaves a compelling saga of five English families whose fates become intertwined over the course of centuries. While each family has its own distinct characteristics, the successive generations reflect the changing character of Britain. We become drawn not only into the fortunes of the individual family members, but also the larger destinies of each family line.

What I Expected
Revisado: 04-28-16
Having read other Rutherford books, "Sarum" was no surprise. The narrator isn't a favorite for me, which does detract from listening to such a long novel.

Historia
Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn’t spoken for many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy’s childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself.

Cheated
Revisado: 04-28-16
This is the first writing by Elizabeth Strout that I have read/listened to. I deliberately did not use the word "novel" because I do not think this work is a novel. It is just too brief, so perhaps novella is a better term. Or, half-novel? Anyway, what isn't in the story could have been as well written as what is published. The characters are worthy of more and the reader deserves more. The narrator is good, but overall I feel cheated!

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Impressive!

Loved this book. I was dazzled by the science & technology woven into the story and the author is so convincing that I sometimes forgot I was reading science fiction! The narrator did an exceptional job.

Beware: Written for Young Teens
Revisado: 12-27-15
What would have made I'll Give You the Sun better?
If the characters were believable instead precocious, artistic, sex crazed and mentally ill.
What could Jandy Nelson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Written a realistic portrayal of fraternal twins.
Have you listened to any of Julia Whelan and Jesse Bernstein ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The performers were very good.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Frustration: that I was, once again, sucked into reading a novel intended for young teens.
Any additional comments?
Yeah, fraternal twins are just like any other brother and sister. Even identical twins rarely show such empathy for one another.

Unsatisfied with Ending
Revisado: 09-24-15
What made the experience of listening to Safekeeping the most enjoyable?
The first half of the novel was very good, but overall I was disappointed.
What could Jessamyn Hope have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I enjoyed this book until the end. Why did the author spent time developing the characters only to leave me anxious to know how they fared outside of the kibbutz?
What does Kirsten Potter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I always prefer an Audible book and this reader did not disappoint.

Historia
In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, set in 12th-century England. Readers and listeners ever since have hoped for a sequel. At last, here it is. Although the two novels may be listened to in any order, World Without End also takes place in Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building their exquisite Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge.

Typical Ken Follett, can't put it down.
Revisado: 06-05-15
I was so glad that there was a sequel to "Pillars of the Earth". I guess it's because I'm a recovering Catholic that I enjoy reading this type of historical fiction which just continues to confirm my views. It helps that there are compelling characters which are richly described and individualized throughout the novel.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Tedious at times
Revisado: 03-27-14
The other five (aged over 60) women in our book club liked the book, but I determined this type of novel (YA) is not for me. I found the teen angst and sexual awakening uninteresting and the snarky exchanges between teen characters annoying. I guessed a good portion of the story in advance and, because the narrator was lackluster and the quality of the production poor, I turned the speed to 2x just to get done with the book.
