Historia
. C. “Scar” Gordon was on the French Riviera recovering from a tour of combat in Southeast Asia, but he hadn’t given up his habit of scanning the personals in the newspaper. One ad in particular leapt out at him: "Are you a coward? This is not for you. We badly need a brave man. He must be 23 to 25 years old, in perfect health, at least six feet tall, weigh about 190 pounds, fluent English with some French, proficient with all weapons, some knowledge of engineering and mathematics essential...."

Disappointed fan
Revisado: 05-23-22
I read Heinlein since I was a child. Indeed, he got me into sci-fi. This attempt at fantasy was very poor. It was written at the end of his career and just seemed a bitter recap of all his complaints about life without any of the expected humor included. Don't waste time or money on this drivel.

A Trump propaganda piece
Revisado: 09-24-20
I was looking forward to reading this since I enjoyed previous Nathan McBride books. In this one however the author decided ut was a good forum to express his political views and basically come off as a Trump cheerleader. Couldn't keep going after multiple Trump fawning. You've lost me as a reader.

Don't need the author's political commentary
Revisado: 05-30-20
The humor doesn't compensate for the author's extreme right wing views and commentary. If the book wasn't already free, I would demand my money back. As it is, I'll know not to buy anything else he does in the future.

Revisado: 08-13-18
Brad Parks' Carter Ross series never disappoints. Consistency should be his byline. As usual it is the twists in the story that make it enjoyable. Never assume you have figured it out until the end.

Historia
Oliver Twist is one of the most well-known stories ever told, about a young orphan who has to survive the mean streets of London before ultimately being rescued by a kindly benefactor.
But it is his friend, the Artful Dodger, who has the far more intriguing tale, filled with more adventure and excitement than anything boring Oliver could possibly get up to. Throw in some vampires and a plot to overthrow the British monarchy, and what you have is the thrilling account that Charles Dickens was too scared to share with the world.

Historia
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Grim reading
Revisado: 01-04-13
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I'm glad I listened to the book if for no other reason than to prove that a writer outside of his/her comfort zone is not necessarily good. We read all the Harry Potter books and enjoyed them as much as our son. However, this book had none of the charm and appeal. The darkness was there, but no redeaming characters or ending. Overall, very grim and dark view of humanity.
What was most disappointing about J. K. Rowling’s story?
The only likeable character died in the first chapter. It was downhill from there. A very dark and troubling impression of mankind.
What about Tom Hollander’s performance did you like?
Hollander was very good with what he had to work with.
Was The Casual Vacancy worth the listening time?
Yes, but with the caveats above.
Any additional comments?
Don't expect excitement or a satisfying ending. Indeed, even the journey to the end of the book was tedious.
