Historia
Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He's a normal Italian teenager - obsessed with music, food, and girls - but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior. In an attempt to protect him, Pino's parents force him to enlist as a German soldier - a move they think will keep him out of combat.

An astonishing story haunted by an annoying lament
Revisado: 09-04-17
The early story, of an Italian teen caught up in the Allied bombing of Milan, then becoming a guide in dangerous treks through the Alps to take Jews to safety in Switzerland, impressed me so much that I sent this Audible book to a close friend. However, when the narrative took a highly improbable, coincidental turn and implicated a love interest, the rest of the book pivoted repeatedly between a first-rate spy thriller and a gushing, saccharine account of puppy love. I was embarrassed to have sent such a book to my friend. My wife and I listened to the seemingly never-ending epilogue together during a road trip with the same reaction - a painfully prolonged conclusion. The narrator does a nice job and about 93% of the book is just great. But spare me, please, from ever again hearing a lament for the love of Anna (appropriately pronounced, oh so many times, Ahhnna).

What disappointed you about Rapid French?
While it lasted, the content was excellent. The level is intermediate. The coverage of subject matter is eclectic, but does not seem disorganized. The French and English speakers (a couple, apparently) interact very pleasantly. The Frenchwoman has a beautiful accent. But I am giving it 1 star because a program of just over one hour is not worth an Audible credit - I suppose I should have paid cash instead. Still, Audible offers this program for cash or a credit; in the latter case, it should be packaged with 3 or 4 other programs. Also, I found the relentless background music overbearing. If the program were 6-10 hours, and if the producers used the music sparingly, it would be an easy 5-star program.
