Historia
“This is not a book to promote tranquility, and readers in quest of peace of mind should look elsewhere,” writes Paul Fussell in the foreword to this original, sharp, tart, and thoroughly engaging work. The celebrated author focuses his lethal wit on habitual euphemizers, artistically pretentious third-rate novelists, sexual puritans, and the “Disneyfiers of life”. He moves from the inflammatory title piece on the morality of dropping the bomb on Hiroshima to a disquisition on the “naturist movement”, and more.

Finally, a realist!
Revisado: 03-27-15
The first part of the book is superb. Finally, someone who looks at things logically. The truth is we did what we did to save American Lives. Those who disagreed were the armchair generals and other elitists who had little skin in the game. This book should be a muse read in school, but I am sure the liberal teachers would never allow it.

Historia
In this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, historian Barbara Tuchman brings to life the people and events that led up to World War I. This was the last gasp of the Gilded Age, of Kings and Kaisers and Czars, of pointed or plumed hats, colored uniforms, and all the pomp and romance that went along with war. How quickly it all changed...and how horrible it became.

Hard to listen to
Revisado: 05-31-14
The book is detailed but boring in my opinion. For me the narrator is simply hard to listen to. After starting and stopping and starting again, I finally gave up on the book about 1/2 way through. Changed to a new book to give myself a break. While the book detail is great, and I am sure I will one day finish this book, the narrator's voice (female British accented voice that for me sounded a bit too condescending and reminded me of a school teacher) just made it hard for me to listen and follow.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Good but I would not say Great
Revisado: 04-17-14
OK, I have to be a realist here. The book was very good. But you need to get through the first 2 hours of listening to a monologue with more detail about engineering, math., etc. Once past that the book then opens up and gets interesting. Several times during that first 2 hours I was ready to give up. Hey, I am an engineer but this was painful and to me boring. Others who live math and science may enjoy it. Its a good listen though, especially if you are a science fiction fan.

Historia
Explore the power of the underdog in Malcolm Gladwell's dazzling examination of success, motivation, and the role of adversity in shaping our lives, from the best-selling author of The Bomber Mafia. Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won. Or should he have?

Great until he gets political
Revisado: 03-01-14
If you read/listen to the book it is really good until he explains the California three strikes law was good but then bad and contradicts himself a few times. Then goes on to compare it to a Mennonite/pacifist couple in Canada. That part is more nonsense and a political statement with Gladwell putting forth a self-serving epistle that aligned with his rediscovering his Mennonite faith. That part DID NOT fit the book. If you get over that part the ending about Le Chambon during WW2 was very good.

Historia
Springing from the author's first-hand experience as an ambulance driver and Red Cross worker during World War I, this autobiographical first novel is noteworthy for its vivid and colorful evocation of France at that time and for its passionate indictment of war. The author's disillusionment with war for a time turned him toward socialism and against capitalism.

Why did I listen to this? Not sure.
Revisado: 08-18-13
Would you try another book from John Dos Passos and/or Jeff Woodman?
No.
Would you ever listen to anything by John Dos Passos again?
Maybe.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jeff Woodman’s performances?
Yes
What character would you cut from One Man's Initiation?
I thought this would be an interesting WW1 drama but it was a short story that made little sense to me. Just not good listen.
Any additional comments?
Its short enough to listen to but not a good book.
