loved the characters and world, great story. a little on the dark side sometimes, and the bad guys were caricatures, but I couldn't stop listening anyway.

I really enjoyed this book! The characters are fun. A lot of the story is about introducing the characters, but then they all come together in an exciting climax that definitely surprised me. Well, part of it did, anyway. I am ready for the next book, Jodi!

A main character is supposed to be Hispanic, but the reader’s idea of a Spanish accent sounds more Eastern European.

A great story, and creative world building. I like Jim’s urban fantasies, but he has made the tradition to classic fantasy without a hitch.

This is a memoir of CSI expert Paul Holes, the one who found the identity of the Golden State Killer. There are lots of interesting stories of investigating crime scenes and looking for perpetrators. The book is read by the author with mixed results. He brings the stories to life, but is not a professional reader. He has a non-standard accent (he has some characteristics of Wisconsin and Minnesota in his speech), and has the annoying habit of pronouncing "a" in almost every sentence as "ay." If you can get past that, the story is quite interesting.

Switch merges fantasy with historical fiction as 16-year-old Ally wakes up in the body and life of another girl her age, Emme, 200 years in the past. Emme, in turn, is suddenly living Ally’s life and forced to adapt to the strangeness of the 21st century. The characters are likable and the backdrop of 19th century colonial Africa is interesting. This is not a "Freaky Friday" clone. The girls' switching turns out to have a purpose, giving the plot depth and suspense. I thought reader Gryphon Corpus did a great job creating the wide variety of voices, accents, and personalities that appear in this book.

It is now the 1860's. The Whitlock family has grown up and scattered to the winds. As the story follows their individual paths the family comes back together, but not without fear and grief. Some important threads of mid-19th century America are here: the Civil War; women's rights; America's expansion into Indian country; the lack of protection for workers in new industries where the dangers are hardly known. If the book had a weakness, it was that each family member's experiences are covered only superficially. There is enough interesting material here (and in the first book, River of Light and Shadow) for the author to write one of those generation-following blockbuster novels. I wish I could have been there when Johnny met his wife, and when Elizabeth went to Chicago. Would I have picked the book up if it had been a generational blockbuster? Maybe not. I tend not to like them. But I like this author. If he wrote it, maybe I would like it. Also, I love reader Gryphon Corpus's interpretation of the characters. I feel like rather than being read to, I am the proverbial fly on the wall.

A gentle romance blooms in a turbulent time

Set against the violence of Missouri's "Mormon troubles" of the 1830's and 40's, this book follows a family that chooses to leave the community of the Latter-Day Saints and make it on their own in the woods. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is more of a background than a topic for the book, and is treated respectfully by the author. The pioneer way of life seems well researched; I feel like I know how to build a sod house now. The romance between the main characters is passionate but sweet. The reader did a good job of differentiating the voices of the characters and bringing the story to life. Gryphon Corpus is new to Audible, but I predict she will become a favorite.

A refreshing look at spirituality

This book is nominally intended to strengthen women who are spiritual leaders. However, I think anyone who feels stifled by traditional religion would benefit from Dr Goff’s insights. She helps her audience understand how to clarify and deepen their relationship with themselves, with their bodies, with God and others. As a woman, I especially appreciated being told that my feelings are my super power. The reader for this book is convincing and pleasant to listen to. She made me feel I was having a conversation with the author, rather than being read to.

What did you love best about The Elegance of the Hedgehog?

I loved the character development. The main characters became themselves in a natural and beautiful way. Minor characters were not forgotten; they also developed personalities.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Do I have to pick one? Renée, Paloma, Kakuro . . . well, if I have to pick one it will be Renée.

Which scene was your favorite?

Renée, stuck in the bathroom while being terrified by Mozart.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh and cry. And it was the kind of book that made me say, Aha! I see where this is going, but then the author did it in such a way that I stayed interested and could still be surprised.

Any additional comments?

The readers are wonderful. Barbara Rosenblatt has long been one of my favorites. Cassandra Morris does a wonderful job being Paloma. The translation does a good job of capturing the flavor of Paris.
