SUPER whiney FMCs.
Revisado: 03-19-25
I couldn’t get through more than 20% of the first two books and didn’t even try in the 3rd. Male narrators are some of my favs but the story just sucked.

Historia
A successful film professor and podcaster, Bodie Kane is content to forget her past—the family tragedy that marred her adolescence, her four largely miserable years at a New Hampshire boarding school, and the murder of her former roommate, Thalia Keith, in the spring of their senior year. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia’s death and the conviction of the school’s athletic trainer, Omar Evans, are hotly debated online, Bodie prefers—needs—to let sleeping dogs lie.

Historia
In Chia-Chia Lin’s debut, The Unpassing, we meet a Taiwanese immigrant family of six struggling to make ends meet on the outskirts of Anchorage, Alaska. The father, hardworking but beaten down, is employed as a plumber and repairman while the mother, a loving, strong-willed, and unpredictably emotional matriarch, holds the house together. When 10-year-old Gavin contracts meningitis at school, he falls into a deep, nearly fatal coma. He wakes up a week later to learn that his little sister Ruby was infected, too. She did not survive.

Poor choice of narrator
Revisado: 09-04-24
The author very obviously never lived in Alaska, and no one taught the narrator the proper pronunciation of places there. But he was also very monotonous and engendered very little sympathy for any of the characters. I struggled through it and finished but only because it was pretty short. Came very close to a DNF. I do not understand all the praise for this book.

The cheesiness and predictability
Revisado: 08-03-24
Seriously how did they get these folks to do this? I figured out in the first chapter who the bad guy was. I honestly have no idea why I listened to the whole thing. So cheesy and just terrible.

I loved this story and performance. I found myself going for more walks or sitting in the car at the end of a drive because I couldn’t stop listening and I was definitely sad when I finished. Highly recommended!

Very uneven performance. Read this one instead.
Revisado: 08-05-19
I wish I’d read instead of listened to this book. I liked the story but the performance was pretty bad most of the time. I actually think it was the editing. It’s like they recorded it twice and each recording was dramatically different but they spliced the together anyway. Very annoying to follow and jarring. It takes away from the story itself.

Impossible as an audio book.
Revisado: 08-02-19
This might be a great story. The first chapter started off enjoyable. But then it devolves into quotes from all these other texts and instead of just letting the footnote references standalone each one is read aloud. It’s ridiculous. So they put all this effort into having 160 people reading but the text references confuse and bore you to death. I might try to read the text book but I gave up on the audio version within an hour.
