I was so excited pushing play on book 5 of the HG series. Learning Haymitch’s origin story explained why Haymitch is, well Haymitch. It blended seamlessly with the previous books and connected and expanded a lot of history. This was all perfect.
The less perfect parts were, for me, the narrator’s voice and speech patterns. He didn’t sound vaguely like the Haymitch we fans know and love. I had to turn the speed up so he didn’t sound like a total hayseed. Around chapter 10 I began to get used to his voice and was far less distracted by it. The story stood on its own legs.
Less forgivable is all the poetry in the last chapter. 😒 Where did Haymitch go? Yes, his girl loved poetry, but would Haymitch express his most sensitive feelings in rhyme? I think not. Perhaps once would have been sweet as a nod to his one true love. But the last chapter really ruined it for me with mention of angels and ravens again and again. It was like a musical in written form. It just wasn’t Haymitch. The last chapter really took some of the shine off the rest of this HG jewel. Still, I heartily recommend it!

How many chapters were there AFTER we knew who did it? Too much self reflection, too much whining. This story could have been half as long. I don’t know I finished it, honestly. Real snooze fest! Save your credits!

I’m new to podcasts but am quickly growing fond of them. The over-the-top title of this one put me off at first. But by chapter 2 I was hooked. Great yet simple story. Not too much music or too many overly dramatic sound effects. It was just right!

I haven’t written a review in a long time. Why? Because I just haven’t been inspired to do so. This book changed that. The minute I finished I knew I was going to write a glorious review. Ray Porter is THE best narrator in sci-fi period. His ability to make you laugh in the midst of very detailed scientific descriptions is baffling in the most pleasant way. Andy Weir took what could have been a bleak tale told as barely more than a report, as so many sci-fi books are, and gave it heart and soul. I was actually emotional at the end of this fantastic story. I must stop now or risk ruining the journey for you. Just listen to this book. It will be the best credit you spend all year! Bravo!!

Wow! My single regret about this book is that there is no sequel. This audiobook is one of the few perfect marriages of author and narrator. I tend to forget much of what I read. I can’t wait to forget the details of this one so I can enjoy it again!

I enjoyed this story but like Scalzi’s other work, the dialogue is SO weak. A typical brief exchange between 2 characters will contain the phrase ‘he/she said’ like a dozen times. for God’s sake. Has the guy never heard of synonyms? How about ‘he exclaimed’ or ‘she replied’? How about giving the reader enough credit to know who’s speaking once in a while? There are times in this great story when I wanted to scream because of hearing Will Wheaton say ‘blah. blah, blah, she said. Blah, blah, blah, he said’ over and over again and again in every single sentence. Even a child would become frustrated with this ridiculous, uninspired twattle. Other than that I loved it, I said. How is that, you said. Too bad, she said. Yeah, too bad, he said. Enough said!

Even if I was OK with the concept of this book, I'd still object to the filthy grossness that was so much a part of this tale. If you can't handle details about sewage, blood, viscera, or the odor of decaying flesh, please do not read this book. There were times I swore I could actually smell something objectionable while listening. Perhaps that's good writing, but for me, there was just way too much nastiness all through this book for the character's stories to really matter. Marwood attempted to weave a tale about people and their intertwined lives and at times character development began to come to the fore, but not for long. His seeming fascination with death, rot and the resultant aromas seemed to be more important. Sorry, but I just couldn't get past the 'stink' of this book. PU!

OMG! This is the most awful story I've ever read. Now don't misunderstand me. It's not the worst written nor does it suffer from poor narration. But the content is bleak and the ugliness the author wants us to see is incredibly, unnecessarily drawn out and repetitive. Really, really, too much. This book, IMHO, could have been written, successfully, in half the time. I mean no disrespect to people who have lived very difficult lives. I also can appreciate that by taking us on this long and winding winding road of sadness, depression, pain and blackness, we can put ourselves in mind of this poor, unfortunate Jude. I kept wishing for one of his vast supporting cast to expect something of this guy other than more of the gloom he lived in. I mean, everyone tip-toed around this fellow and kept asking him if there was anything else they could do FOR him. Maybe if they'd expected a little bit FROM him, he'd have had something to strive for. I don't know. This book really bothers me...alot. I usually like books that are based on real life, even the edgier side of living. But this book delves too much into it to be entertaining in any way. I only stayed with it to discover if the ending might, please God, hold some surprises. I won't give anything away here, but I feel I must offer a warning. Do not read this book if you can't handle misery on top of agony wrapped up in suffering. This was a rough one that just went on for far, far too long.

Guaranteed to make you cry? Well, maybe. But they're feel good tears. The story is wonderfully layered and beautifully woven. The narration more than does the story justice. Read this one!

Year of Wonders is a gripping tale & was well written. But,....and this is a BIG but, as many have stated previously, a writer should never read their own work. Well, OK, if Will Patton ever decides to write a book, please, let him read it too. But in this case, with all due respect to Miss Brooks, someone else should have narrated this important, powerful story. Her voice is thin & watery for starters. She has no ability to change her voice to even hint that another was speaking. At times she sounded like a bored school kid doing an oral report, sometimes trailing off at the end of sentences. There were moments when I felt she might just as well have said 'Yada, yada, yada' or 'blah. blah, blah' for all the enthusiasm she showed. Truly, it was the worst narration I've chosen to sit through. If the story hadn't been as good I'd have given up an hour in. I thought about giving up many times. The fact that I didn't testifies to the strength of the book itself. I know not everyone can read like Davina Porter of 'Outlander' fame, but come on! This was weak & uninspired despite a story that should have fanned at least a little heat. I wish I could say more about what I liked about the story itself, but the reading of it totally overshadowed everything else for me.
