Long regarded as one of Trollope's greatest works, it is a complex story of love, greed and illegitimacy. Set in fictional Barsetshire, it concerns the romantic challenges facing Doctor Thorne's penniless niece, Mary, and Frank Gresham, the only son of the impoverished squire of Greshambury. Mary falls in love with Frank but he is constrained by the need to marry well to restore the family fortunes.

I had intended to listen to this book only while commuting but became so enmeshed in the storyline that I ended up devoting entire evenings to it! Peter West is a stupendous actor-narrator, breathing life into the characters so imaginatively that they come to seem like people you've known for years.

Historia
Barchester Towers is the second of six in the series known as Chronicles of Barsetshire. Narrator Timothy West brings life to the story, begun in The Warden, of Mr. Harding and his daughter Eleanor. It chronicles the struggle for control of the English diocese of Barchester after one Bishop dies and a new one is selected. The rather incompetent new Bishop, Dr. Proudie, led by his formidable wife, and ambitious chaplain, Mr. Slope, begin to create turmoil with their desire to shake up the church establishment.

Anthony Trollope's wit, satire, and multifacetted characters have found their ideal narrator in Timothy West. With his genius for intonation, timing, and modulation of voice, West brings out Trollope's genius to full fruition. I can't wait to devour more of this pair!

Great intro to the Barsetshire series
Revisado: 03-18-25
I first read "Barchester Towers," the second in the series, which made me so fond of gentle Mr Harding that I had to go back to this one, the first in the series and the one in which Mr Harding is the central character."The Warden" is not as complex or satirical a work as the next one, but it helps fill in the backdrop for "Barchester Towers," The whole series is luscious!

Historia
Verging on death, a starving, destitute writer navigates the cold and indifferent city of Kristiania in search of his next meal. Frenzied and fevered, he chews on stale bread, devours scraps of wood, and bites his own finger, sleeping under the stars in old, pungent blankets, until one day he is able to sell an article and buy some food - only for the cycle then to repeat itself....

Moving, dramatic interior dialogue
Revisado: 12-27-24
Amazing description of what long-term hunger does to the mind as well as the body. It is so effective at recreating the chaos that starvation can wreak that I literally got a stomach ache while listening. This is also an excellent translation and narration.

Superlative narrator enhances Flaubert's prose
Revisado: 09-08-24
I fell in love with the performance given by Michael Maloney. Flaubert already writes with such grace and poetry, but Maloney's narration, both gentle and dramatic, brings out the full splendor of the writing. The story of Frédéric 's life-long adoration of Madame Arnoux is rather hard to comprehend nowadays, but this was standard fare in nineteenth-century novels. highly recommended!

Historia
In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. Like so many of us, Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He tried all sorts of self-help solutions—even abandoning his phone for three months—but nothing seemed to work. So Hari went on an epic journey across the world to interview the leading experts on human attention—and he discovered that everything we think we know about this crisis is wrong.
