Historia
In Geisha, a Life, Mineko Iwasaki tells her story, from her warm early childhood, to her intense yet privileged upbringing in the Iwasaki okiya (household), to her years as a renowned geisha, and finally, to her decision at the age of 29 to retire and marry, a move that would mirror the demise of geisha culture. Mineko brings to life the beauty and wonder of Gion Kobu, a place that "existed in a world apart, a special realm whose mission and identity depended on preserving the time-honored traditions of the past."

Spoiled child.
Revisado: 02-18-25
It's not fair to this book that I;d read Memoirs of a Geisha first. This is more autobiographical and much less interesting. Mostly I felt I was looking at a spoiled child who had what she wanted out of life. Being just about her life, it didn't have much of a plot. It's interesting, but not engaging.

From the dragon-filled Temeraire series and the gothic magical halls of the Scholomance trilogy, through the realms next door to Spinning Silver and Uprooted, this stunning collection takes us from fairy tale to fantasy, myth to history, and mystery to science fiction as we travel through Naomi Novik’s most beloved stories.

Lovely stories!
Revisado: 02-18-25
Novik is a delightful writer. Half fairy story, half cautionary tale. She flips a story that seems to be going somewhere dreadful to something magical with great skill
Some of the accents were a bit much for me. But the stories are worthy.

Historia
It's World War I, and young Glaswegian Dougal Kerr is a new recruit in the British army. Dougal has no family and no past, but his easygoing demeanor belies his cheerless upbringing. There's only one thing that gives Ian Rutledge pause: Dougal is very good at killing, and he doesn't seem to mind it at all - in fact he seems to relish it. In wartime, how does one tell the difference between a remorseless killer and a guid soldier?

Short but with a punch
Revisado: 02-18-25
Charles Todd has a gift for showing how different wartime decisions are from our everyday choices. His is a hard punching story about what you do with a sociopath in war. It's chilling. But it's a good read.

Historia
This lyrical novel sweeps listeners away to an ignoble period from Japanese history, when lives were shattered by intolerance - and for one group of societal outcasts, survival hinged on the determination of the human spirit. In 1948, a 19-year-old pearl diver with leprosy is forced to erase her name from family records and move to an island leprosarium. Mere miles from the home she can never return to, she must accept that her life will never be the same.

Sad but lovely
Revisado: 02-18-25
I was familiar with the stories of Molokai. This is Japanese, and in many ways different. It doesn't stress that, but people's reactions are stronger. It's clearly a different culture.
For me, it's about how you treat people you are afraid of. Cautionary. Unfortunately, I believe it to be accurate.
The girl herself is brave, kind, strong, and heroic in her ability to do the things she could. I loved her.

Another book I've loved forever. It's a bit dated, but not in ways that count. It explores how we take in something new and how at some times we simply can't. Great read.

Historia
Women rule in Women's Country. Women live apart from men, sheltering the remains of civilization. They have cut themselves off with walls and by ordinance from marauding males. Waging war is all men are good for. Men are allowed to fight their barbaric battles among themselves, garrison against garrison. For the sake of his pride, each boy child ritualistically rejects his mother when he comes of age to be a warrior. But all the secrets of civilization are strictly the possession of women.

This is a story about deception and sensibility. And making your world work. I've always loved it, and was delighted to find it on audible. I'd love to see this as a classroom book for literature. It's a great turn around.

He’s just not quite sure what.

This started out so well. There's a neat male modern-day witch accepted by his world. Then they add the love interest and it's endless bed time. 'With almost no plot. I found it unreadable after a certain point. Not a prude, but this was not to my taste

I can’t say if it’s the writing or the delivery of this book. It’s got the depth of a postcard. It reads like it’s for an eight year old. Neat subject. Very disappointed.

No one knows where the Tufa came from or how they ended up in the mountains of east Tennessee. When the first Europeans came to the Smoky Mountains, the Tufa were already there. Dark-haired and enigmatic, they live quietly in the hills and valleys of Cloud County, their origins lost to history. But there are clues in their music, hidden in the songs they have passed down for generations.

This starts slow and it's not what I expected. Delightful end to the thing. I'm tired of fairy books, and I'm not a mountain fan but this has both in it in a way that completely surprised me. Highly recommended.

Holly Ash is good actor. Just one downside: Most of the people she’s acting with have no idea they’re a part of her fiction. One that has been carefully constructed by the secretive company that Holly works for, known as D.O.P.L. Every assignment is a new role, a new name, a completely new self. Her newest role is “Margot” and her newest target: a boy her age named Will Aldrich.

This is a bit more romance than I care for, but the premise is quite different and it's well worked out. It's an enjoyable read with a mild sci fy premise.
