Historia
The man’s body is found in the early morning light by a local dog walker in the park outside Rosebank, a home for troubled teens in the coastal village of Longwater. The victim is Josh, a staff member, who was due to work the previous night but never showed up. DI Vera Stanhope is called out to investigate the death, with her only clue being the disappearance of one of the home’s residents, fourteen-year-old Chloe Spence. Vera can’t bring herself to believe that a teenager is responsible for the murder, but even she can’t dismiss the possibility.

Not her best.
Revisado: 10-17-24
I’ve loved the Ann Cleeves books but this one is not her best. The writing isn’t great. It’s funny that she uses the word “taciturn” multiple times. Vera thought this one or that one was taciturn. Not a word our beloved Vera would use. It’s almost like Cleeves had a bet with someone about how many times she could use the word. And there are numerous times when she wrote “pause” “another pause” during many of the characters talking. It’s lazy writing. Also the book starts with the narrator speaking as the 14 year old and the voice she uses is dreadful- it’s cringe worthy - it almost put me off the novel but I suffered through it.

Historia
Some $65 billion evaporated during Bernie Madoff’s epic confidence game. Two people were driven to suicide in the wake of the Ponzi Scheme’s exposure. Others went to prison. But there has never been a satisfying accounting for how Bernie got away with so much, for so long. Until now. Shocking, infuriating, riveting (and at times absurdly funny), Madoff shows us how Bernie ensnared thousands of investors. As Behar’s dogged reporting over the last fifteen years makes clear, however, there aren’t many innocents left standing by the end of this tale.

Nothing new here
Revisado: 09-26-24
A lot of rehashing what was covered in prior articles and the movie and miniseries- the parts about the 4 horsemen would have been interesting if it didn’t drag on so long repetitively and be generally unsubstantiated. Don’t know why the author felt the desire to publish this so long after the events as it is just more of the same.

Historia
When a worker goes missing from a North Sea gas platform, there seem to be just two possible explanations - it was a tragic accident or a suicide. It does not take Smith and his detectives long, however, to discover that James Bell led a double life back onshore in Kings Lake, a life complicated enough to make him at least one dangerous enemy. Before the case can be unraveled, Smith must get a new team working together.

Was a slow progression to an unsatisfying ending. Also the narrator does odd female voices- they sound creepy and breathy. He does the worst on Jo the writer- cringy.

Historia
When Jem Rosco—sailor, adventurer, and legend—blows into town in the middle of an autumn gale, the residents of Greystone, Devon, are delighted to have a celebrity in their midst. But just as abruptly as he arrived, Rosco disappears again, and soon his lifeless body is discovered in a dinghy, anchored off Scully Cove, a place with legends of its own. This is an uncomfortable case for Detective Inspector Matthew Venn. Greystone is a place he visited as a child, a community he parted ways with. Superstition and rumor mix with fact as another body is found, and Venn finds his judgment clouded.

Never really gained momentum
Revisado: 12-30-23
I loved all the other Ann Cleeves series books and the first one in this series (the long call) but the last two in this series were not great. This book never really unfolded in a way that gained momentum and the solution to the mystery is handled by the main character detective telling the other detectives the motive and method rather than seeing it unfold in the character development and plot- that seems uncharacteristically lazy for this talented writer. The narrator was great, but the writing was disappointing.

Historia
Into Keldale's pastoral web of old houses and older secrets comes Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Lynley, the eighth earl of Asherton. Along with the redoubtable Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, Lynley has been sent to solve a savage murder that has stunned the peaceful countryside. For fat, unlovely Roberta Teys has been found in her best dress, an ax in her lap, seated in the old stone barn beside her father's headless corpse. Her first and last words were "I did it. And I'm not sorry".

Historia
No one in Heppleburn has a bad word to say about Alice Parry...but here she is, murdered in her own backyard on a bitter St. David’s Eve. When detective Stephen Ramsay starts asking questions in the village, a more ambiguous picture begins to emerge. Yes, old Mrs. Parry was loved by everyone, but sometimes her kindness had caused trouble. Yes, her two nephews were devoted to her, but they didn’t really want her interfering in their rather complicated personal lives.

Revisado: 08-12-22
Inspector Ramsay is an undeveloped character. This book had a lot of village characters- not all necessary and an okay plot- not the usual level of her writing - just okay. This is no Vera or Shetland for sure.

Historia
Chief Inspector Morse seldom allowed himself to be caught up in New Year Celebrations. So a murder inquiry in a festive hotel had a certain appeal. It was a crime worthy of the season. The corpse was still in fancy dress. And hardly a single guest at the Haworth had registered under a genuine name.

Kevin Whately does an excellent narration. I just find this plot rather implausible so it wasn’t as satisfying as some of the Morse series.

Narrator detracts from the story
Revisado: 01-27-21
This narrator uses a voice for Joe Ashcroft that makes him sound like a big dumb plod and that isn’t the character. It was so distracting, it ruined this novel for me. I won’t buy any more Vera stories with this narrator.

Hardly a day goes by when nine-year-old Laurent Lepage doesn't cry wolf. Including Armand and Reine-Marie Gamache, who now live in the little Quebec village.

Too much cloak and dagger
Revisado: 11-10-19
We don’t read Louise Penny for spy stories. She tried to combine the Three Pines setting and characters with spies and international intrigue and it was rather disappointing. The book is very repetitive with the same facts over and over and over. I like the other Three Pines books. This one is a miss. Louise Penny should stick to what she’s good at. This is NOT it.

Could be better for two reasons
Revisado: 10-15-19
The writer needs to stop the repetition. Do we really need to know every time the characters use a turn signal? “He indicates and...” before every turn. And the sudoku references just need to stop. 100 times - enough! The second reason is the narrator’s female voices sound like all the women are mentally challenged and the children - dreadful creepy voices - he should just not do voices for these characters. Really made me cringe.
