Incredible Depiction of the effects of emotional/.physical trauma
Revisado: 01-27-25
I had a really hard time getting into the story because of the narration.
Julia was good, but the others grated on my nerves. Stick with it, the story is worth it.
To say the story is sad is an understatement!! You can’t but help continue listening to see how things turn out for Alice and Julia. The power of love to heal the human spirit was portrayed beautifully. Definitely recommend this book, but not my favorite Kristin Hannah novel.

Historia
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

I had to laugh several times! I found it entertaining to listen to but definitely not brilliant literary genius work. It was light hearted and overall I enjoyed it.

Historia
Los Angeles, 1920s: Socialite Mirielle West's days are crowded with shopping, luncheons, and prepping for the myriad glittering parties she attends with her actor husband, Charlie. She's been too busy to even notice the small patch of pale skin on the back of her hand. Other than an occasional overindulgence in gin and champagne, which helps to numb the pain of recent tragedy, Mirielle is the picture of health. But her doctor insists on more tests, and Mirielle reluctantly agrees. The diagnosis - leprosy - is devastating and unthinkable.

Had no idea these places existed in our country, interesting story
Revisado: 12-03-24
How sad it was what these people went through; so much loss and humiliation. Treated as if they weren’t our fellow human brothers and sisters at all! Heartbreaking. But the way the people at the leper colony formed deep bonds with each other that was truly beautiful and an inspiration to all humankind!! This book is like nothing I’ve ever read. I learned a lot. Give it a chance!

I really liked this book but it wasn’t a five star for me. I definitely had not figured out the ending, so that was good that it kept me guessing, but I still did not find it a page turner. It was just a mellow, comfortable read.

My favorite Kristen Hannah book!
Revisado: 09-04-24
I don’t know where to begin?! It grabbed me right from the start and never let go! I found myself holding my breath so many times. The depth of description of both scenery and emotions these people experienced was like nothing I have ever read. I thought, “WOW” how does someone come up with all this? What an insanely talented writer she is!!! 75%into the book it took a turn I did not see coming and I just couldn’t stop listening for hours and then it twisted again. I Don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I will say that I enjoyed the ending even though I was worried through most of it.
I wish she would make a sequel to continue with the lives of the characters we love so much and maybe introduce some new ones to the Great Alone.

Loved these ladies! Such a good read 😃
Revisado: 08-03-24
The cheesy ending was unlike the rest of the book.
It just didn’t fit, much too cliche with the Christian lines. I’m a Christian and love the truths that were spoken, it just was a big turn into preaching and felt unnatural. The characters then became way too perfect to be believable. People don’t just forgive and forget in an instant; it’s more of a process for most of us.

Incredible true story; one of the best historical novels we have ever read!!!
Revisado: 03-01-24
We think Netflix or HBO should make this into a miniseries! There is so much written into this story; bravery, love, war, loss, faith, and so on and so on. We really enjoyed listening to the part at the end telling us what happened with all these people after the war. The only thing we didn’t like was the “female” narration. Definitely worth the 13 hours
