I don't know the story told because...
Revisado: 04-16-24
...because the narration is so horrid. I got just past the second chapter, but had to throw in the towel. I'm sure the narrator is a lovely person, but he sounds like a mature, British William Shatner giddily sharing his range.

Historia
In 1993, David Koresh and a band of heavily armed evangelical Christians took on the might of the US government. A two-month siege of their compound in Waco, Texas, ended in a firefight that killed seventy-six, including twenty-five children. America is still picking up the pieces, and we still haven't heard the full story.

Very, very good.
Revisado: 03-09-24
I was looking for no frills information on what happened at Waco, and this book is exactly that. Informative but engaging, and more even-handed than I'd have ever expected one source to be. I feel far more informed, and will be giving it another listen to pick up details I may have missed the first go 'round.
The narration strikes the exact right chord - informative but not bland.
Well done.

I was interested enough to see it through since the show left me hanging with too many questions, but my teeth were grinding all the way through. why is this woman speaking to us as 5 year olds? This is a murder mystery, not Dora the Explorer. She's just terrible.

Imagine a London where magic is real...real, but feared. This is Eliza Braxton's London, and she has always accepted her place in it gladly. As one of the Riftborn, her magic has relegated her to the servant class, where she dutifully serves as the lady's maid in one of the most powerful households in the country. There, she uses her remarkable powers of persuasion to keep Elder Hallewell's rebellious daughter in the path to an arranged match of power and prosperity. Eliza has never questioned her loyalty...until now.

I gave it a shot. I did. I tried speeding it up to shorten her loooong, breathy phrasing. It didn't work. Who hired this woman? No clue if the book is good or not. All I could hear was that ridiculous, sing-song voice.

The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low.

Again with the idiotic portrayal of women
Revisado: 07-12-21
Every female character in this performance sounds like a pre-school teacher. There's an 8 year old character who came along to actually fit the sing-song nonsense.
The plot - nowhere near the quality of "The Hunger Games", but interesting enough.
It's NOT for 12 year old kids, no matter what the blurb says. Hangings, murder, drunk people - no. If this were a movie it'd be PG-13.
Female readers, boycott this Audible recording and just go read the book.
To the narrator, director, and Scholastic team that approved this mess, get a grip. This kind of flagrant misogyny isn't okay. It never was, isn't now, and will never be.
You need to re-record this with a better, more human director and narrator.

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war - and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.

Insulting portrayal of women.
Revisado: 07-02-21
I can't believe this was approved by the publisher. I've heard bad female impersonations in narration before and rolled my eyes, but Jeff Cummings is absolutely offensive. High pitched, aspirate, and empty headed - every single woman. It's insane. If I'd seen a film with this kind of misogyny I'd storm out and tell everyone I know to tell everyone THEY know. Even Juliana is an airhead in this guy's estimation. Vague and airy to the point of some sort of mental issue.
To Jeff Cummings, Brilliance Audio, and Audible I lodge this complaint, and yes, I'm going to tell everyone I know to tell everyone they know.
Perhaps they should all read that other popular alternative reality book, "The Handmaid's Tale".
Absolutely disgusting.

Revisado: 05-18-21
Kind Mr. Moore, I haven't laughed this hard since Martin Jarvis got his teeth into Gaiman & Pratchett's "Good Omens" or Stephen Fry got his own into Adams' Hitchhiker Trilogy. "Shakespeare for Squirrels" is solid gold. Or silver.
Silver. Definitely silver.
