Historia
In honor of Martin Luther King Day, we are again shining the spotlight on the remarkable life of Fannie Lou Hamer. As a small child, her hard labor was key to her family’s survival. She grew up to become a fiery civil rights activist who would not be silenced by intimidation, violence, or the personal wishes of the President of the United States himself. so much opining
Revisado: 02-11-25
it is unfortunate that these stories are told with so much side commentary and opining. the regular you, yuck, gross, commentary distracts from the facts of the history they wish to tell us. I'd like the opportunity to form my own opinions about the information and to decide how I feel about the actions of those involved by applying my understanding of the cultural norms of the time and then be able for myself to contrast those against where we have made progress or simply changed our culture up to today.

Banned Book due to N word
Revisado: 05-21-24
I'm deeply disappointed to have found this book on the band book list. the dedication to equity and inclusion that is expressed in this book, layered over the top of the 1930s Alabama communities is incredibly well written and expressed. it's not just about white and black, it's also about neighbors and disability and acceptance and kindness. if you choose to be offended simply because of the n word you're missing a lot of opportunity to learn, to review the growth people across the ages.

Historia
Booker T. Washington’s 1901 autobiography can be read as a redemption story echoing many similar voices of its time. Starting from the humiliation he experienced as a slave, he ponders the meaning of identity in a situation that seeks to dehumanize. He furthers his story by expanding on his difficulties in obtaining an education and the need for change in our minds as well as societal structures.

speech pattern distraction, great listen
Revisado: 12-21-22
this is a great story, a fascinating perspective on history, from a first person viewpoint. I believe the reader is attempting to imitate the speech pattern of Mr Washington. To my modern ear it is stilted and took me a while to get used to. once I adapted it was great, I could see myself sitting with him and listening.

Historia
Why is it that so many efforts by liberals to lift the Black underclass not only fail, but often harm the intended beneficiaries? In Please Stop Helping Us, Jason L. Riley examines how well-intentioned welfare programs are in fact holding Black Americans back. Minimum-wage laws may lift earnings for people who are already employed, but they price a disproportionate number of Blacks out of the labor force. Affirmative action in higher education is intended to address past discrimination, but the result is fewer Black college graduates than would otherwise exist.

Revisado: 08-14-22
Well written and researched. We must stop holding people in systems that truly DO NOT serve them, but rather keep them in struggle, poverty and cause them to be truly underserved. You could also call this book, "When helping actually hurts"

one of the things I love about this series is the way history is woven in. including the history of the development of herbal medicine and how various illnesses were managed in different times.

Historia
Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place. Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries. The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes.

personalities of things, the narrator in her head
Revisado: 11-18-21
I loved this book. I'm not sure I would have loved it as much had I read it but that is to be found out later. I loved listening to this story personality that was given to things and to places. is the author says the story may not be for everybody but it has been perfect for me. it is very different like the character, it is relaxing and it explores so much of human emotion. I will need to listen to it again for even when I paid close attention I know there were things I missed.

In this must-listen book for anyone striving to succeed, pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows parents, educators, students, and businesspeople - both seasoned and new - that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a focused persistence called "grit". Why do some people succeed and others fail? Sharing new insights from her landmark research on grit, MacArthur "genius" Angela Duckworth explains why talent is hardly a guarantor of success.

Revisado: 10-14-20
overall lenjoyed this. it helped me relax and destress, but I think most people breathe too fast and too shallow. this author seems to want me to breathe more quickly and more shallowly than I typically would, while calling it "deep breath"

Historia
In 1960, Ishmael Reed, then an aspiring young writer, interviewed Malcolm X for a local radio station in Buffalo, and the encounter cost Reed his job and changed his life. In Malcolm and Me, Reed, the author of such classic novels as Mumbo Jumbo and the winner of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, reveals a side of Malcolm X the public has never seen before, and explores how the civil rights firebrand influenced his own views on working and living and speaking out, and left a mark on generations of artists and activists.
