Historia
The American Revolution is often portrayed as an orderly, restrained rebellion, with brave patriots defending their noble ideals against an oppressive empire. It's a stirring narrative, and one the founders did their best to encourage after the war. But as historian Holger Hoock shows in this deeply researched and elegantly written account of America’s founding, the Revolution was not only a high-minded battle over principles, but also a profoundly violent civil war—one that shaped the nation, and the British Empire, in ways we have only begun to understand.

In depth analysis of the horrors of Civil War
Revisado: 08-22-24
A Revolution is not just glory and honor. In a Revolution that is also a civil war, violence is employed as a tactic of war.
Much more than a listing of dates and battles, this book gives fresh insights into what it was really like at Bunker Hill, the streets of Boston, or the back woods.
Worth a listen, an ear to the past with an eye on the future.

Historia
The American 345th Bomb Group - the Air Apaches - was legendary in the war against Japan. The first fully trained and fully equipped group sent to the South Pacific, the 345th racked up a devastating score against the enemy. Armed to the teeth with machine guns and fragmentation bombs, and flying their B-25s at impossibly low altitudes - often below 50 feet - the pilots and air crews strafed and bombed enemy installations and shipping with a fury that helped cripple Japan.

Brings Family History to light
Revisado: 01-01-20
I grew up listening to my dad's stories of the Air Apaches, and looking through his worn out album of the group. It brought tears to my eye listening to the story of his plane "Gremlins Holiday" being shot down, and the rescue under fire.
Well done, and great way to honor the men of the 345th, who fought a forgotten war, in a forgotten part of the world. But their actions set up the eventual defeat of the Japanese Empire.

Historia
In 1892, Bryan Mealer's great-grandfather leaves the Georgia mountains and heads west into Texas, looking for wealth and adventure in the raw and open country. But his luck soon runs out. Beset by drought, the family loses their farm just as the dead pastures around them give way to one of the biggest oil booms in American history. They eventually settle in the small town of Big Spring, where fast fortunes are being made from its own reserves of oil.

Weaving Family History into the history of the land
Revisado: 04-30-18
This story goes far beyond just a genealogy of a family , it weaves together their unique history with that of a city, a state, and a country.
My family originated in the same place and the same time, so I found it personally interesting, putting detail to the old family stories about drought, plenty, and always the struggle to survive.
My grandfather’s family took a different path after selling much of the family farm to the refinery that figures so prominently in the story. I still have “cousins” working in the refinery.
A story that everyone should use as a model for their own family history.

A Study in Critical Decision making
Revisado: 07-31-17
If you could sum up Into Thin Air in three words, what would they be?
A great story on many levels. On one level there is the story of the thrill that comes with pushing yourself to the limit. There is the story of the group dynamics and the stress when this group includes highly motivated people. There is the story of strict planning required for an assault on Mt Everest. Then finally there is the story of how these stories collide when disaster strikes, and the ultimate struggle for survival in the most inhospitable environment on earth.
